Mark Longhurst has just come on early to cover the Breaking News on the release of Paul & Rachel chandler from Somali pirates

Still not broken on BBC News, more than fours hours later!!!

Probably something to do with what Jon Williams, Foreign News Editor at the BBC says in this tweet:

Always difficult decision not to report a story: sometimes no choice for legal reasons. No public interest in breaking law to claim a scoop.

Though not sure exactly why they cannot at least report the Chandler's have been released, but for legal reasons they cannot report further details at this time.

Not just BBC, was ITV too, but now ITV News now reporting online they have been released, as reports come through that plane carrying them is flying out of Somali. I'd imagine BBC will start reporting same soon too. Question is what kind of legal issues prevent the BBC and ITV from reporting statements of fact I.e. they have been released, but Sky can?

Max Clifford has already tied up an exclusive deal for their story?

Now being reported on the BBC:

Explanation from the article:
Quote:
The BBC has observed the terms of an injuction obtained by the Chandlers' family which was intended to stop news organisations reporting their release until they were out of Somalia.

Why did Sky choose to break the injunction? Did any other channel run it first?

I saw on twitter one comment saying something along the lines of "CNN beat Sky and BBC to report Chandlers' release".

Not a comment on rights/wrongs of what Sky did in any way, but if the above is correct then I imagine Sky saw CNN had broken the injunction and went ahead with it on the basis that the cat was out of the bag and there was no point holding back.

Sky have their faults, but they are generally pretty solid on legal issues like this, so it's a surprise they went ahead.

The others I saw it on before they were out of Somalia were Reuters, the Telegraph, and the Guardian.

I do understand the BBC/ITN's decision, but I think once it's going around on Reuters, CNN, and Sky, the game is pretty much up.

EDIT: I think just to add to that; that they crashed into coverage around 5:45am probably indicates they were bumped into covering this by someone else. There's a few posts on twitter suggesting CNN reported it a good hour or two before Sky. Sky had their correspondent in Nairobi, so obviously knew about this well in advance. If they had an interest in just breaking the injunction on their own they could presumably have done so on Saturday or in a more structured way. Again, not a defence of their action, but perhaps an explanation of it.

I suspect they will be forced into commenting on the case.

Technical glitch at the TOTH at midnight, After Lisa Nights read the headlines we stayed on the holding animation with the Sky News logo for a good minute into the hour whilst Lisa Nights spoke in the background lol

Agreed the titles look nice, although anything would have been better than the rather unimaginative previous set.

Very good discussion about the situation in Ireland at the top of the hour with Jeff and his guests as well, much more informative and less reliant on speculation than coverage I have seen on other channels.

I'll try and get a few more later... I'm sure other people will get some too, the more professional members.

Are you listening to this interview? How much further up Sky's arse can Randall get? Good on the guy from Discovery for pushing the point about platform neutrality.
