Live at five with Jeremy
With applications closing this week who do we see as the next successor for Adam Boulton as Political Editor? A job he held for 25 years it will be highly coveted from both internal and external candidates. For me Joey Jones is the natural successor as Political Editor but will Sky favour an external candidate such as Chris Ship or Andy Bell? Personally the dark horse for me is Dermot Murnaghan. A very good point about Dermot, but then that would leave Sundays without a presenter, I cant see Dermot wanting to do all of that, as he cut the end of the week to do Sundays.

Would be a step down surely for Dermot Murnaghan - he's far too good a newsreader to be standing outside Number 10 for hours on end. Kay Burley on the other hand...

Iain Dale muses on the subject ....

He'd select The Guardian's Nicholas Watt. He also mentions Jeremy Vine, which would be an interesting choice.

I think Cathy Newman would be good, however she has ruled herself out. Just have a feeling it'll be a woman. Daisy McAndrew maybe?

Lol as if Dermot and Jeremy would give up their handy 250k +a year jobs to actually go back to reporting.

I would be very, very surprised if it was Jeremy Vine. I can't see him leaving the beeb.

You lot are all nuts.

As is Iain Dale, who mentioned just about every hack under the sun in his blog piece.

The idea that someone like Murnhahan or Vine will leave their cushy presenter jobs. Or that it will be Daisy McAndrew. Perlease.

The real dark horse here is Robert Peston, who is only gatecrashing as a business journo. His real beat is politics, and it's widely known that he wants back in. He's also had major life upheaval the last few years, and may fancy a challenge.

This is one of the biggest jobs in political broadcasting, and it isn't going to be anyone but the highest profile and biggest names in the biz.

Adam Boulton is reported to earn more than 400,000. Sky can afford to pay someone well if they want them. I read Iain Dale's piece earlier, and it mentions a lot of interesting contenders. The thing is, we just don't know what type of person sky will look to. It is 25 years since they appointed the last one!

Although I'm sure will continue to pay Adam that salary, so for a non-profit making division I wouldn't assume money won't/can't be a factor.

Has anyone got any names to through into the hat for replacing Jeff Randall?

Just been announced that Ian King from the Times will replace Randall.
