Could have been a cock-up in transmission control at Osterley - with the Sky News Ireland video feed being routed to the uplink used for Sky News UK (and thus uplinked on the Sky News UK frequency)?
Alternatively the EPG gubbins at Sky could have been screwed with UK EPG entry 501 being mapped to the Sky News Ireland frequency (and service IDs) rather than the SKy News UK one?
Both would cause the same thing to happen on a Sky box. Be interesting what viewers watching on non-Sky badged boxes (non-Sky FTA receivers) saw.

I was watching on Freeview between 1900 and 1930 and it was Sky News Ireland. I've never seen it before so it was nice for a change. There was no mention of it at all by either the Irish presenter or the UK presenters when it went back to London at 1930. Certainly seemed very odd.
There was clearly an error somewhere. I can't think of any other reason why it was being broadcasted. The weather (sponsored by Smart Telecom for the doubters, a company I've never heard of) was focused only on Ireland and the Irish presenter said he'd be back at 2200. Just checked, and he's not so a clear mistake.

Yes, it is available at the same transponder as Sky news Uk

You also get Sky News Mosaic, i.e. the Sky News Multiscreen raw feeds and Sky News UK and Eire Cable version, again, they show different ads and that's it. I think Sky News Cable version shows more Sky Digital ads to persuade them to join them...
M@ says freeview also showed Sky News Ireland whilst others say it didn't - perhaps this is now regional/transmitter based now? At a guess, I would say Crystal Palace/London?

Might be a good idea for Sky News to take SNI for half an hour each day, just to break up the monotony and give a slightly different presentation perspective to the day's events. (In the same way that N24 takes BBC World for half an hour each morning around 0930hrs-ish, for example.)
