Quick query... my local shopping centre shows a rolling information screen provided by Sky News. It has simple headlines, weather, sport in just text and still image format. I was wondering if this is broadcast on Sky (albeit hidden) or would the shopping centre just have a link to a stream online?

I only ask as I have a few bars that require something along these lines to go on their screens and I draw the line at BBC News with live subtitles that are about half hour behind what's on screen.

We have this in our local shopping centre and most mainline train stations, I'm of the understanding that it's a special piece of kit that takes information realtime and displays it and it's not a broadcast feed.

The ones at the railway stations are all moving video with spoken audio though, and local weather.

For example, it is possible through RSS feeds service provided by signagelive

Provided you already have the ability to show a Flash file on your screens, and you have an internet connection, it shouldn't take anyone with a bit of Flash knowledge very long at all to knock up a RSS (either BBC or Sky website sourced) driven presentation.

Yes I've often wondered about these screens. There is a big BBC sponsored screen in the middle of Edinburgh too. Would this likely be internet fed too?

I'd have thought Satellite would be cheaper though. IIRC ASDA FM operates via satellite precisely for this reason.

I believe TVMercia works on the BBC Big Screens project, it's all controlled centrally from The Mailbox and is IP fed (Don't quote me on that)

Most of the London mainline staions use the Sky screens, Westfield's shopping centres have a contract with ITN.

The ones at the big stations used to have BBC content on them before they switched to Sky. When they were BBC they had adverts so I assume they're run by whoever's got the advertising contract, they then just take the data from Sky to fill the gaps between the adverts

The ones at shopping centres run by 'The Mall' have Sky too

Just to add to the above, train stations like London Victoria have these giant screens streaming headlines from Sky News.

Yes, Liverpool Lime Street has one too. Must be in most of the big city stations.
