Sky = Fox, no?

Again I say - they've got all this money and have to sponge off other people?

So glad I've never given them any of my money

How old are you? You have perhaps the most simplistic view of broadcasting I've heard. I suggest you get a bit of knowledge about how things work before making silly points, and you might sound a bit more credible.

Yes sir! Mad In fairness it is Sunday afternoon. My brain doesn't function on a Sunday.

Listen mate, you ain't a moderator so don't tell me what I can and can't say. And to call my view of broadcasting simplistic is an insult. I'm a second-year media student at Falmouth College of Arts and their Media Centre facilities are amongst the best in the country - digital editing suites, full studio setup for both TV and radio, AV suites, two functioning newsrooms and a large library. In fact I'd highly reccomend anyone wanting to go into the broadcast industry to go to Falmouth. I think I know enough to be a valid contributor to this forum. No-one else has complained in my last 90-odd posts. You go off on one just cos I drew a simple comparison to Sky sponging BBC Scotland's feed and Fox sponging CNN's feed? And then feel it necessary to rubbish my (personal) view that not subscribing to Sky is a good thing?

My point was: Sky/Fox thinks it's the best news organisation in the world. They doubtless have resources equal to and in some cases beyond CNN and certainly BBC Scotland. They tried to be clever by taking another channel's news feed (essentially usurping it for their own needs) and failed miserabley. I think I'm allowed a little chortle, don't you?

What was I thinking insulting somebody from Falmouth College of Arts.

There, in two paragraphs, ladies and gentlemen, is dross to the extreme. If anyone could kindly explain the concepts of resource sharing, live feeds and why "sponging" has nothing to do with it, I'd be grateful because I'm too hot to explain this to a Falmouth College of Arts attendee.

This reminds me of a little incident in America last year, during coverage of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. CNN had access to live feeds of what was left of the shuttle hurtling to the ground, through their CNN NewsSource affilates. FOX had none of these shots, and their coverage was rubbish compared to CNN, so FOX decided to simply use CNN off-air pictures. CNN noticed this, so after a few minutes they threw up every bug, lower third graphics, music they could, and split screen between the live shot and the studio. This sure got FOX's attention, and they soon bailed out and cut back to studio.

That's a totally different situation.

Fox just rebroadcast CNN directly, without permission, attempting to pass it off as their own. They were caught out - rightly - when CNN put their logo on the screen. As I recall, CNN didn't 'throw up' every graphic they had... they just cut to a shot of their anchor in front of a screen with the CNN logo on it.

I'd be very surprised if Sky had actually just gone out and stolen BBC Scotland's feed without agreeing some sort of access rights. I think there would be potentially serious implications for that.

Yes. But what does Fox being Fox have to do with Sky using a BBC Scotland feed?

What do you want, a peanut?

They were sponging off CNN, yes; but I'd be very surprised indeed if, as you seem to be suggesting, Sky were doing precisely that same thing with BBC Scotland.

I can't win here. It's a conspiracy!

I think it's necessary to clear up something quite important.
Sky News did NOT "sponge" the BBC Scotland feed. It is incorrect to suggest that.
It was obviously a pool feed which Sky took live. They certainly did not "sponge" the BBC's footage it and had every right to take it.

The point was, I dont think they should have taken it live because, as happened, when it crashed the BBC logo was enblazened across Sky News.

So what? That's the very nature of live TV - anything can happen.

Live footage has to come from somewhere so if the SkyCopter isn't on the scene then why shouldn't footage come from the BBC regardless of the chance that if it fails it'll throw up some default caption revealing the true source? It's not like they haven't used the BBC's feed before - this year's party political conferences had a BBC logo floating around on them for example albeit not obviously.
