I know SN like to fill time, but I think linking across to a car chase in CA being covered by Fox is a bit much.
I don't think so. I didn't realise Sky News covered this, I actually caught it on Fox News as I was flicking through. It kept me watching for a few minutes. It's still a novelty in this country to have a live car chase on TV, so as long as there was nothing more pressing for Sky News at the time, I don't think it's such a bad move.
Not the first time Sky News has taken coverage of a live car chase from the US.
Car chases are pretty big in the US media, local channels are known to drop entire schedules to carry live footage of some idiot driving ridiculously fast down "the freeway" to cries of "unbelievable!", "he's out!" and "Shots fired!" from overexcited commentators.
We don't see live car chases in this country and hopefully we never will do. American media is obsessed with interviewing the guy who drove at a ludicrous speed down the motorway before he's even been loaded into the back of the police car. Over here it'd be called contempt of court. Even as desperate as ITV is to crank up the viewership, I doubt coverage of somebody tearing up the M1 in some clapped out car running over a spike strip would be as appealing as Corrie.
Half the stuff on Police Camera Action consists of drivers who either give up, run off or some other equally boring resolution. In America fugitives run red lights, cause major pile-ups or drive the vehicles off a bridge or to a point where they catch fire. Either that or they get nudged by squad cars and roll over. We do TPAC, which might be safer for everybody else but it ain't half boring to watch on archive footage.
But anyway, live car chases on Sky: Bring them on. Makes a change to the usual flow of things. Long as they don't drop something more pressing to show Joe The Plumber wrap his car around a lamppost, it's not a bad move indeed.
