"Reports of loud explosions heard and smoke rising in Goodmayes and Barking area of East London / Send your pictures to news@sky.com"

It popped up on the breaking news ticker for about 3 minutes during L@5 before being pulled.

Bit careless to put something like that on air without anything concrete.

It seems the 8pm toth was a bit of a mess according to Steve Dixon's Twitter:

Quote:
Top of my 8 o'clock prog a disaster but then first aider called to the sound booth. I may be silently mouthing all night.

Then

Quote:
Turns out the sound man collapsed - hence he didn't fade me up. Not a bad excuse!!

I'm sure in most other jobs twittering while on the job would be a sackable offence. Completely pointless exercise.

Why completely pointless? Because you dislike Twitter?

I think in this instance it can get people to tune into Sky News to see what he's talking about, depending on how recent the comments are.

Well, maybe that implies that you are not concentrating at work? Laughing

Sky News coming under fire at the moment due to their extensive coverage of the Jade Goody story. AFAIK it has been the top story now since Friday am?

What are your thoughts on this? Are Sky right to lead with this story or should it be further down the news agenda?

I feel sorry for her, don't get me wrong, but theres millions of people going through this, some even younger than Jade. It should no way be the top story.

As I just posted in the Jade Goody thread, it's even more ridiculous considering they can't show anything. At most it's an "And Finally..." story.

Being the top story does and has raised awareness of the disease. That said, it is excessive now, possibly because it's a slower news day? I don't think it could be classed as an "And Finally..." because they're generally lighter hearted, and this really isn't a light hearted story.

It's typical Sky News when it comes to these types of stories really - they tend to get a bit OTT with their celebrity stories from time to time.

The thing this weekend is, there is no obvious lead. Nothing particularly newsy, but you can always build the Jade story, and it is new at least. I think it's not a suprise they are leading with it, what else do you have?

It is cheap news at the end of the day isn't it? Like the blanket coverage of snow in London, when it left the capital there wasn't half as much coverage.
