Yes, indeed. Wish him and his family all the best. I did notice he'd been away for a lengthy period of time but never imagined it was something so serious.

On another tangent, Matt Smith has posted an interesting picture of some of the software used by Sky News to put together the dot com show:

Indeed, that's the system that Sky News use across all shows for scripts, running orders etc. I'm amazed he was allowed to post that to be honest! Laughing Sky are very private when it comes to computer systems!

I don’t think there’s anything too revealing in that shot. It’s simply a screen grab from iNews, which quite a few news companies use for running orders, etc. - http://www.avid.com/solutions/808.htm

Also, spot the new political party...

Have they still decided to do nothing with the video wall? I didn't think that the Barco LED screens were detailed enough for close-up hi-def shooting.

It seems Picnic has been approved by Ofcom. Sky News' days on Freeview could be numbered to make way for a pay offering, which could include Sky News on DTT but encrypted.

I must say I do think removing Sky News from Freeview will basically finish the channel. It will never be able to compete with BBC News in terms of ratings ever again. At the moment for big breaking news coverage Sky often beats the BBC in the ratings, but that will soon change if it goes. I know Sky are keen for it to become a "premium product" but let's be honest it will just slip further into obscurity. The HD channel will enhance the offering but ultimately the ratings slide will continue and BBC News will gain in popularity.

I think BSkyB really do underestimate how many people are watching on Freeview or in pubs / train stations / other public places with a Freeview set on switched to ch. 82. - but there you go. They are willing to chuck all that away in order to squeeze even more cash out of people.

I would be really keen to know how the presenters feel about this story - could someone on here who uses Twitter put it to Martin Stanford? Let's hear what he has to say about it.

Asked Martin whether Sky News would leave Freeview. Here is his reply

Yeah it is staying as it is, apparently it looked fine on the HD tests.

Surely Sky are not so bothered about the ratings if it is a pay-to-view channel - as they will more money from subscriptions than advertising.

Thanks for that. Interesting stuff. I was wondering what line the presenters themselves might take, but clearly Martin is not afraid to admit that lack of Freeview carriage would be a very bad thing for the channel. I remember when news of Picnic first hit the internet there were murmurings that many Sky News staff were unhappy about the proposals - this sort of confirms it for me.

Anyway hopefully it won't happen. Still waiting for official confirmation of the situation from Ofcom.

Samantha just plugging the Budget coverage tomorrow and the full screen graphic used had a similar look to the Leaders Debate ones, with blue and red spikes somewhat resembling the Union Jack. It was also described as 'Decision Time-The Budget', perhaps some hints as to what the election branding will look like?
