Yeah, doesn't seem to be for the HD channel, as mentioned it's not MPEG 4 and Sky tends not to mix SD and HD channels on the same transponder. Probably just some weird techy thing for the interactive or something - I'd presume (hope!) that it's not a +1!
About the HD channel, though, not sure if it's been mentioned here before but I noticed in the Sky magazine it's confirmed that they'll be doing what a lot of the American HD news channels do, and during press conferences etc. have panels with extra text information at the side of the screen that won't be seen on the SD channel.
Wow, big deal she didn't know that. The person with her didn't know either.
Seems like now people are taping Kay's show only to upload parts where they could hate on her more.
Those Andre fangirls are quite something.
I think my issue would be with her comments about the luge being somewhat ill advised and ill timed, the ash comment is not that big a deal, if not a bit unprofessional sounding.
Sky HD channels are broadcast using DVB-S2 modulation (which gets more data into a given transponder bandwith than DVB-S), and although you can broadcast SD MPEG2 channels on a DVB-S2 transponder, you can't tune them on Sky Digital DVB-S SD digiboxes.
The BBC, ITV and Luxe all broadcast HD services in DVB-S so that they can share the transponder with SD services tuned by SD receivers - but lose the benefit of more efficient modulation.
(This is independent of H264/MPEG4/AVC encoding vs MPEG2 encoding)
Sky News HD is VERY unlikely to be broadcast on a DVB-S transponder I'd have thought - there is no need to waste bandwith in doing so.
My guess is that this is going to be an extra Sky News Active stream, maybe something to do with the election. I base this guess on nothing whatsoever.
Do we know if Sky plan to change their logo and graphics and launch the HD channel when the election is called? Seems like the most likely time. There have been numerous times recently when the channel has been prerecorded overnight (for testing?).
I only ask because Gordon Brown is giving a speech on Sunday to launch the Labour party manifesto, and he could announce it then. I remember 2 elections back when Tony Blair announced it during a speech in a school - Sky News went to a break shortly after, and came back with completely new music and graphics in full election mode (when the very nice white and teal look began).

I did like the look despite it not matching the logo or the rest of the studio!
Well there is certainly a new logo on the way when HD launches, which presuming everything is going to plan and there is not a very early election, should be ready for the campaign.
I imagine they might like to have it all up and running a few walks before any campaign, just to have all the little niggles ironed out.

Presuming you know more than you are letting on, is this new logo just the uppercase logo replaced with the new lowercase one, or is it a totally different logo?
