I guess though the news will face the same problem with HD as it did with widescreen - even if they upgrade, most the source material will still be in SD.

I wonder if Sky News HD will be FTA like Sky News is. I think the chances are that it won't be but I'm surprised that Sky News is still FTA to be honest, so anything is possible.

Now that Sky have launched their new HD box, it looks like you can get hold of one of the older models for £49 without paying £10 a month for the HD package. If Sky News HD is FTA, this would be a good way to cheaply get three (Sky News, BBC and Luxe) HD channels.

I would expect Sky News HD to be part of the HD Pack.

A non HD sub box will get BBC HD, C4 HD (with viewing card), ITV HD and Luxe HD.

Sky News HD 'Side Panel'

Sky News HD will have a Information Side Panel, according to an interview with John Ryley in this months Sky Magazine.

John Ryley, Head of Sky News, told the magazine “As well as the clearer pictures, a key feature of Sky News HD will be an information side-panel to accompany the news. For example if a politician is giving a key speech on crime and youth unemployment, the director will be able to call up a side panel on screen so HD viewers can see the latest crime and youth unemployment statistics”

Sky News HD will launch in the Spring.

Interesting idea, but to me, it sounds no different to current presentation really, except for the fact it will probebly exploit the safe areas to show this. I imagine it to be in a similar vain as below?

are they planning on having a completely separate feed then for HD? or does this mean that when the side panel is shown the picture will be a 4:3 image moved fully to one side to allow for use of the extra space to be combined and made use of.

My understanding is that there will be two separate feeds, and there will be a nice box of tricks that will generate the appropriate style of graphics for each feed. From the coverage of President Obama's inauguration and the HD material from Sky News on Anytime; it looks like Sky are keen to ditch the 4:3 or 14:9 safe areas for HD.

Is E4 HD a subscription channel rather than FTV?

(And ITV HD is only partially supported - you can only watch live, with no pause or record functionality on a Sky HD box running the new EPG s/w)

Quite sensible - running different graphics boxes for different outlets is a sensible way of doing things. (ISTR it is how the BBC handle BBC News/BBC World News Channel joint overnight and the BBC One/BBC News Channel simulcasts at One and Ten?)

Let's just hope this doesn't turn Sky News into Bloomberg... Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

This is how Fox Business do it,

Sky will probably do the same, use the left as a 4:3 cutout and add the 'wing' in to the right.

Yep - though hopefully it will be optional and only used for news conferences, coverage of speeches or major events etc. Fox do it because they don't have much in the way of 16:9 content? All their location stuff is presumably still 4:3 SD, and they didn't want to pillarbox it, so they run their HD studio in a strange "4:3 HD" mode (cropping the 16:9 camera framing to 4:3ish).

Sky don't have this problem as they have loads of 16:9 SD location content (which may switch to 16:9 HD) - and it would be odd if they suddenly ended up with stuff in 4:3 on the HD channel but 16:9 on the SD one?

MSNBC have this type of set up. During daytime hours (9am-4pm) all programmes have a side bar with weather, business and news headlines. However all prime time programmes and Morning Joe have full 16:9.

E4 HD is subscription. All the HD boxes now have the new EPG. It's true though that you can't use Sky+ features, but unlike Freesat it's available 24/7 and a few non HD programmes now are broadcast upscaled.
