Agree, I reckon the news channels sometimes get carried away with these types of things when all they need to do it cut-in live when an important thing happens (like a verdict of an inquiry, etc) or even show highlights later on & for people who want to watch the full inquiry can simply press the red button.
Sky News and BBC News are going to be unwatchable this week - once again the idea of rolling news will be ditched in favour of continuous live coverage of the Iraq inquiry, which is not what I expect from a news channel. Stick it on the red button and let the main channel carry on reporting all of the days news.

Have they?
There were stories yesterday that the party leaders couldn't agree over the audience - whether they could ask questions and how they would be made up. Per the News of the World, labour wants the audience to match the number of MPs now, the conservatives the current state of the polls.
Today we have the "news" that the debates could clash with Champions League football, and for some reason that is an issue.
It sounds like a lot of spin, but sounds to me that at least one if not more than one of the leaders is trying to find excuses to pull out.
I think they are still far from certain.
Are Sky still showing the appeal in the ticker to sign a petition for leader debates even though they were agreed weeks ago?

They have been agreed to the point the leaders have all agreed to do them and the broadcasters have set their dates.
The fine detail still to be agreed - as you say the News of the World ran an article on it yesterday saying the politicians wanted the audience to sit in absolute silence and not ask any questions throughout.

Just goes to show how much of a disaster ITV think it will be, since a football match will generally crush the rest of the opposition in the ratings.
I expect one of three things to happen with regards to the debate for ITV:
1) The ITV1 debate will end up on a non-football night, and/or a non-Corrie night. Which realistically means it's destined for a Sunday night slot.
2) ) It'll end up probably on one of the ITV digital channels, none of which are suitable for it anyway and it'll just be totally ignored.
3) ITV will just decide not to bother at all and the mantel will either be passed over altogether or picked up by Channel 4.
Way we're going on it'll be lucky if they happen at all. After all in theory we could have an election any time between the 17th of February and the 3rd of June.

Sorry, it appears you were interrupted whilst writing that. Would you like to finish?
Good thing the other broadcasters will be replaying it, after ITV1 show it...

Surely a Tuesday night would be ideal?
