The only thing I'd lose is the live/locator. It clutters the screen and means all four corners are occupied.
make the live location a strap animate, bring it on, let people read it, then lose it. We don't need to be constantly reminded of where the interviewee is
Agree! kinda like on the fabulously designed new Five News
To be honest, I was being flippant earlier. I don't think it is all that bad.
Ticker is better, straps are better, split screens, coming up graphics, etc are all an improvement. I even like the top of the hour sequence... quite clever and gets across the message that "we aren't just a tv channel, you know".
One thing I do think is a step in the wrong direction is the logo. The old one was probably the best they'd ever had. For some reason this tower one reminds me of a cross between an ice cube and an old carrier bag, and the horizontal one just looks like it's been badly cropped in MS Word.
The live bug is as bad as ever. I mean, of all the things to not change..!
Yep, totally salvageable, really they just need to have a few tweaks to the straps, lose the black border on the clock (as you've done there), and integrate the Live bug with the logo in the top left, and I think they'll end up with quite a nice look.
Some of the full-screen stuff like the newspaper graphics look very good.
The spinning tower has gone, as have the 'sun' style straps. New backgrounds, wipes, double boxes and matched thematic elements for TOH and coming up sequences.
The new backgrounds are not brilliant, the coming up and ToTH are not useful, and are awful in terms of branding, but it is good that things are starting to match up with each other.

The dog is at the top to visually match across all platforms: TV, active & Web.
The website uses a boxed version of the awful logo, On TV its up top, and on Active its at the bottom with the clock, and changes to the old one done in the 2005 relaunch style.

So what if the city news has a different background? Sport has done for years ON ALL CHANNELS. It does match the flagship business programme 'Jeff Randal Live'.
The only reason to mention it, is because Sport, Papers etc now match.

So what if a few elements have not been updated yet? If the font, colours or aspect ratio had changed then it would be poor. They have not.
The problem with Sky News's 'brand' is the colours and how they use Helvetica (all caps, small sizes, overly heavy weight).

For the first time Sky have got it right in 16:9. Viewers can now see the pictures on screen and not have them covered with a mass of background: To be 4:3 safe all graphics would have to either have a mass of unused space or start/stop in stupid places.
A Revolution: Just use the area on screen you need to get the information across! so simple, and done with less fuss than CNN.
CNN International works much better as it doesn't hang its straps awkwardly, and uses block colour, good on-screen contrasts, friendly font with both cases, I don't see how you can call it fussy!!!

How can anybody interested in TV suggest BBC News24 is a design success? Huge areas of black (or white..) and red animate on screen to reveal tiny words - which are justified the wrong way for clarity, we read from left to right for F * sake.
I don't know who thinks BBC News 24 is perfect, I have issues with it as much as with Sky, but at least they keep their elements contained in a neat space, without having elements all over the screen.

Not a cliché globe in sight, or very very very important 'data streams' flying around. yes old sky news globe was a good brand image, but with every tom dick and martin having google earth in 2008, those images have lost value.
I agree the Globe in its usual form is a bit pointless these days, but that's no excuse for NO kind of branding image. Abstract glass cubes can be used well, look at BBC Arabic, but the way Sky use them is not a brand, and a blue gradient and random squares, are not any better. Its about time, Sky got some professional branding designers to sort out the Sky News brand, because its just guady and awful at present.

I'm sure a few here will be obsessive with praise for the new BBC look, which will be a triumph of style of usability and viewer friendliness. When you see the appalling regional news titles and set update elements rolled out (they really are a cold mess) i hope you come back and withdraw some of your more reactionary comments made today...
If Sky News were regional news, it wouldn't warrant such a strong reaction, but it is an Internationally broadcasted channel, and as such should take some pride in its appearance. There will be many who criticise when the BBC News look is unveiled. All we can go by is some small web images, which look a hell of a lot more promising than Sky News's "image" and much nicer than the awful BBC News red ribbon/shell logo which was also an in-house creation. The fact Lambie-Nairn has a history of producing good branding, and has a proven success for BBC News, means we can have some faith for what may come. Sky News has only designed one good on-screen look, and that was in 2005, which BBC News 24 copied and *******, but even that is better than what Sky News changed to and what they have now.
pigs might of course fly (through a dated red and orange clown world)[/quote]
The rolling news channel seems to have taken style tips from both its major rivals, BBC News 24 and CNN International, in what are its
first major on-air changes for over a year.
I think that says it all really.
So how long do we give this look then - I'd say about 18 months or so and then Sky will probably get a more major overhaul more on the scale of 2005 next autumn.
So, I'm home for a long weekend - being reintroduced to this whole TV nonsense, and I have no idea what I'm watching. New graphicswise, all a bit underwhelming. My issue of the moment is this awkward and bizarre sport segment, with some of the most uncomfortable banter between Chris Scudder (I may have just made up that name) and Kay Burley. Is it really always this awful?
Good to see some more sweeping newsroom shots this afternoon. Regarding the graphics, I shall upload some captures from videos I was sent of the graphics in development. Some elements are slightly different to whats reached broadcast. Thats development for you!
