Good as they are, they were reporting that the sieges were over on Thursday evening.

They were reporting what the local media & police were telling them.

The usual local channels were still going out on the other news channels and they weren't reporting it, neither were the agencies. The live pics from the scene hadn't shown the hostages leaving or anything unusual happening

Sky were out there by themselves, and got it wrong

I think they ran caviates. I kinda like that. When they know something, they tell us. Far more honest, if what they tell us has a chance of being wrong.

But if they aren't sure that it's correct, why run with it at all? They did run it as 'Sky Sources say that....' but that's no good if the thing that their sources are saying is totally incorrect!

It's a definite that the sieges would be over at some point... they can't go on forever. Sky could have run with 'it's all over' every half hour and they would have been right at some point!

I strongly recommend that they should re-hire Martin Popplewell to be their Dubai (or Abu Dhabi) based anchor person.............. Laughing

I can confirm there is going to be some rejiggling as such in the studio in the coming months, some deskspace is going to be moved and the desk may be moved back. One thing I know for sure though is that the shoebox will be getting more studio space.

Any news on the channel going HD any time soon? Wishful thinking, but for the 20th anniversary it would be nice...! I know they've been using HD capable cameras in the field for at least a year, and a few of the one-off documentries have appeared in HD on Sky Anytime. A news channel seems to be the last major missing piece from Sky's HD offer.

Would the quality of the newswall have to be improved before they could go HD?

That was cool. Martin went to speak to Joanna at the news wall to get the latest on the wintry weather.

Sky News has announced that for the first time it will broadcast in High Definition for the inauguration of Barack Obama on 20 January 2009. The swearing-in of the 44th President of the United States will be witnessed by millions in Washington DC and many more around the globe on TV – and Sky News viewers, for the first time, will be able to watch the event in HD on Sky Arts HD - Sky channel 258.

Sky Arts will also simulcast the event across Sky Arts 1 (Sky 256, Virgin 284, Tiscali 114) and Sky Arts 2 (Sky 257, Virgin 285). Viewers without HD capability on their TV sets will be able to enjoy the event as normal on Sky News, channel 501, as well as Sky Arts 1 and Sky Arts 2 but for those who want to watch HD quality pictures, alongside Sky News’ award-winning journalism, Sky News programming will be on Sky Arts HD (channel 258) from 5pm GMT, screening both the inauguration ceremony and the parade that follows.

HD channel surely only a matter of months away. Is it possible the set updates are to make it look better for HD?

I would assume, rightly or wrongly, that they will need to take the studio out of commission for a couple of days to complete the set changes. It may seem sensible to do the newswall upgrade plus other changes at the same time.

I would expect they will broadcast out of Millbank during the re-work.
