On the whole it's better than the last relaunch, it looks less tabloid now, especially without the stupid spinning dog!
Does this mean it's good, Not really, its like a cheaper version of CNNI.
It's looking like a news channel again though - not Fox News UK as it was some months ago.

I think 'Ste' owes me an apology!

Overall, looks good on air, a lot better than the previous set of graphics it must be said! Good to see the 2005 logo back, tweaked with 'rounded corners' as I mentioned in the old Sky News Thread.

Well I'd like to go against the grain here and say that I thought the old graphics were a hell of a lot neater and better. I never really understood why people disliked them so much.

Don't get me wrong, these aren't *that* bad. It just seems that every time they have a refresh like this, there are always a few rogue elements that make me think "who the hell decided that would be a good idea?!" This time it's the bizarre animation of the straps, last time it was the randomly spinning logo.

Surely it's not just me that longs for them to come up with something simpler, with less white and none of the silly animation?

What i never understand is if they want fancy animation, why not get the people who do the Sky Sports ones(football etc.)to do it?

Im not saying i like the OTT animation but id rather it was done right than done in this way.

I feel if you are going to do animation you need to get it right or it will look tacky,Sky Sports get it right,Sky News does not.

Whoever designed these needs to be shot. They need to learn from the people who designed News 24, who in turn are half-arsed amateurs compared to whoever originally redesigned ITN a couple of years back...

oh, wait... Wink

Something that Sky News is still seriously lacking, is any feeling of substance to their identity.

Currently all their identity consists of is a logo, a wishy-washy blue animated background - which means nothing, and their increasingly dated music. In years past we've had proper titles, and the globe motif (which was instantly recognisable as Sky's globe), which says a hell of a lot more than anything they have now to identify them by.

They need to bring back a solid, unique branding to the channel which will help set it apart. To me the way they present themselves on-screen these days is surprisingly old-fashioned, something I never used to think Sky News would become.

Arrow Nothing lines up
Arrow It all looks like its been run through the Photoshop Plastic Wrap filter
Arrow All the text feels cramped
Arrow The logo is too big, and looks worse than before
Arrow The TOTH music is bad and to flashy for the little it gives the viewer
Arrow The strap animations add nothing but more mess and complication
Arrow Market Graphics don't match the other backgrounds
Arrow The edges of the clock are too thick, and don't fit on the ticker
Arrow News active intros are still using the old logo, and 2005 title intros

This is just the start. It is possible for them to try to redeem things, as they tweak it in the coming days, but I fear it wont be enough to counteract BBC News' new look, which just from a web image, feels modern, clean, and fresh.

Anyone else agree that it's time they went back to the drawing board and redesigned Sky News from scratch?

The edge's of the clock do fit on the ticker

Also, the red strap sticks out to line up with the black line on the left hand side of the clock. The white, with the information, lines up with the white rectangle for the clock.

Aswell as that, the business background has the London skyline, but notice behind that is the background with the floating squares, used on the TOTH, newspapers and sports graphics.

I admit the logo may be a little big. I also agree with Martin that the BBC News rebrand, just from the image on the website, looks fresher and cleaner. It most likely will be better than Sky's presentation, but I think in comparison to the old graphics, this set is actually quite nice. Remember all the people who said "We want something like CNNI" and other comments when the old package of graphics were put on-air. Well the graphic designer's have listened to us.

Yes, they listened, but they didn't get the spirit of CNN International.

CNN use large friendly mixed case typography, with enough space between the 2 lines and space between the edges of the text and its containing box. Apart from the logo up top, most of the info, like Live Location and source captions stay at the bottom, also the logo is self contained so works in the box, sky news' logo doesn't, and the changes made to it are awful!

CNN International have better priority of sizing for straps, the story title is small and bold, while the important text is very clear.
