I think that they have done a bloody good job, if I'm honest, especially the fake newswall bit they use for the business news. The only problem with it all is that it shows how badly they used the set before if they can recreate it so simply and make it barely noticeable to the untrained eye!

Will be interesting to see what they've done - I'd have thought it would have been finished for tomorrow, ready for Obama's inauguration this coming week. They're going to have a lot more viewers than normal, perfect time to show off something shiny and new.

Here Here

Lets hope this makes the execs take this refurbishment work as an opportunity to bring some variety to the on-screen presentation (Set and Camera shots) from here on in.

I know the whole 2007 TV Scandals took their tole on News Presentation going "back to basics", but as their viewership declines, and as others try their own "back to basics" ideas, sky should go back to 2001-2002 and be brave and unique once more.

I would hope they would consider changing the predominant blues and reds in the news centre, either to include some colour changeable elements, or go for something more interesting as in, Purples, Oranges, Teals, with the odd red, blue and yellow bits here and there, it would be able to work with new colour schemes for the graphics, and be a less anemic feel for the newsroom shots.

Purple and orange? Sky News should be red and blue! I hate they got this two colour pallettes going at the moment, its either blue/red or black/red/white. Wish they would make their mind up.

If I had my way they should go back to red and navy blue, and not this washy blue colour they're using right now.

I agree onsky - sorry Martin - usually agree with you on everything!

Personally, I think that Sky News have just established the current look; since 1998 we have come to identify Sky News with blue, red and white. I also think that the current astons and graphics look good.

However, the titles are not great; I always liked the ones used when they moved to the new centre in 2005, yet changing to purple, oranges and teals would mean that Sky News would loose its identity and confuse people more.

I also think that such a radical move would scream "we do not know what we are any more".

Sky News should be very careful about whatever changes it has in the pipeline. The schedule changes every five seconds, the graphics change every five seconds and Anna Botting's shifts change every five seconds.

Some stability is long overdue on Sky News!!!

Yeah, you are completley right. In 2005, all graphics were simple, yet classy and bold. What we have now is more cheap and tacky. Sky News has even lost its music identity, because the TOTH is a different piece to the headline music.

Programmes are scheduled too differently, yet remains mostly the same content, with a mess being made of programme names.

Thats why I think Sky Sports News works so much better, its presentation is simple, but it works.

I think before 2005, people could tune into Sky News, and could get the news straight away, with a strong identity. Now, we have a dismantled identity, and programmes that fluff the content up too much.

I would keep programmes like Sunrise, and Live at Five, Dot Com but return the rest of the schedule to just Sky News. Stop with this Afternoon Live, Weekend Lunchtime, News,Sport and Weather mess.

They should take a huge leaf out of Sky Sports News and Sky News Australia's book.

Yes I was only referring to the set.

Using secondary colours instead of the primary's Orange for red, Purple for blue etc, along side the others would really give a more human and warmer feel...

Headline News Set

Martin, I like the examples, but I think MSNBC has an a broad range of colours thanks to the pallet of the NBC peacock and Al Jazeera English have golds and the oranges thanks to the AJE logo. They also use blues with some graphics as well. The middle example has foxed me though - where is that from? Smile

Yeah, having light blue and a pale red rather than change the colours would be better than changing things so radically. Why not make the shades of red and blue get darker as the day rolls on?

For example, I do not think having purple and yellow for Sunrise, green and pink for Sky News Today and blue and orange for Live at Five makes much sense. I am sticking to an Ann Maurice approach to this Wink

Again, I think that there is the question of identity is at stake here and the lack of constants.

Some stability at Sky News is long overdue!!

This studio is blue and red, but those two colours are broken up by the teal and orange. I am not suggesting ditching the red and blue, but breaking up the monotony and using the primary colours sparingly.

Also green is too strong a contrast of the Yellow > Orange > Red > Purple > Blue > Teal spectrum I am suggesting.

Also changes to the studio...

- Lose the White globe

- Desk closer to HD ready Newswall

- Shoebox doubled in size and turned into a soft (interview/sunrise ready) set, with a blurred and frosted glass minimising the harshness and business of the newsroom.

- Podium/Bar presentation area with the newsroom behind

- Lose the Fins

- Use the top area for overnight/world news presenting, showing news desks similar to the sky report backing in the early promos...

- Humanise the colours

- Have a sports desk setup somewhere in the newsroom so sports aren't presented from the sidelines of the main desk, and this would have a large plasma screen showing footage from various sports networks and having its own importance.

- Weather to either have their graphics designed for the newswall (no more distortion) or have its own large display screen somewhere

Yeah, I see where you are coming from and agree with a lot of the above!

However, I wonder if all this can be achieved with having various strengths of blue and red along with a constant white?

BTW - where is the first studio pic and middle studio pic from your previous post? Is this CNN HLN?

Surely the newswall isnt going HD, they would have to replace the whole lot, which would cost a fortune?!

If the desk is moving closer, they need some kind of upgrade to make it cleearer. It makes sense to go the whole hog and make it HD ready IMO.

Sky are pretty good as far as HD is concerned!

I do think this will happen sooner rather than later - they are now plugging Sky News HD online - so I can see this developing.

Sky News will have to move on this front or the BBC, CNNI and AJE will beat them to it.

Do we know if we'll be back in the main studio this week?

Isn't that a local set from the US? I can't for the life of me remember what the call signs are but it is either Pacific or Mountain. Don't think it is CNN.

With respect Martin, you say that you want the weather to have their own large screen, but they have this at the moment with the CSO screen. But, you've just said that you'd get rid of this with the fins?

They could use a CSO if they want. I would move this somewhere else, as I remove the fins, but I would rather they have a mini-newswall rather than CSO, or make the graphics fit the main newswall, and not be warped and stretched to fit.

Sorry Martin, I combining two different sets in my mind to give me that one. This is KLAS CBS8 in Las Vegas.

Their graphics aren't up to much and their style is a little bit slower than your average US station but you can't beat their talent.

This really is a perfect set to demonstate just how HD tv should be done. Just check out the variety of textures and layers that you've got their, yet not one is dominant and indeed the ultimate backdrop is rather bland and uninspiring

I hope they will change this boring newsroom background. They should go back to using story graphics and backgrounds on the newswall.

I remember how much I wanted them to change the blue globe they had since 2005. Now I wouldn't mind if they brought it back, it was very good and had a lot of details.
