Is that a "real" shot of Kay? Looks like a (not exactly brilliant) chromakey/CSO job with the white outline she has.

Yep, it's real!

I always thought that shot looked awkward to me. It's definitely less formal than the regular table (where I wonder why they don't have a removable ramp) but if the news reader is able to sit on the couch why can't the anchor? The shot blocking just seems off. I think it would look okay if they ditched the desk and put an equal amount of couch on the other side of the vertical monitor but with removable sections so a wheel chair user can fit in.
No, it's Kay and the team's preference to do it from there on Christmas morning because it's more-informal, but it also gets used from time-to-time when there are large groups of people (especially children) or wheelchair users appearing as guests or contributors.

Funnily enough, the one time I've made an appearance on that set was for a discussion on attitudes towards disability, as I'm a wheelchair user myself.
Kay asked me something along the lines of: "What's the difference between how you are able to carry out your job and how any other Sky News journalist might?"
And I replied something to the effect of: "Well, for one thing, viewers will have noticed we're not at the desk!"
