Ah right! That's why.
Martin Stanford was really struggling when they did get the pics though. When he was interviewing someone from the hostage's organisation he was all umms and ahhhs!
They really do need to have more than one presenter when major news breaks. It's difficult for someone to present on their own when they've got to interview people, read the wires and keep track of what's going on.
They should have one of the presenters from other strands cover in the event of breaking news. Something like this:
Sky News Today presenters cover Jeremy from 5-6pm, then Julie covers from 6-7pm. Jeremy would stay on to cover Julie until 8pm. Jamie would have either or both of the Sky News Tonight presenters cover him - in the event of UK news they'd both come on and take over from him, in the event of international news he'd stay on but just to give expert analysis.

Or they could just stop trying to reinvent the wheel with triple heading bulletins and move the "spare" to add on the single headed shows.
In other words- what they did before spending £20m.

Presumably the BBC can offer a reciprocal agreement with al-Jazeera providing feeds from around the world when AJ can't get there.
Sky don't really ever get exclusive feeds from their own cameras, and since AJI will go into direct competition with Sky, it doesn't make any sense for AJ.

Could be to do with the fact that the BBC negotiated (after months of trying) a deal with al-Jazeera, and Sky so far haven't been able to/won't negotiate with them.
I imagine that Sky had to wait for APTN/Reuters to get hold of them, unless they phoned up AJ and talked prices for 20 minutes.

Sky do get exclusive lives during big breaking stories quite a lot, actually.
al-Jazeera had to negotiate with Sky on the 7th and 21st July, and was able to take Sky's helicopter shots live.
Sky also have the APTN deal - taking over from the BBC - so lots of Sky's pictures are circulated internationally via AP, whereas the BBC don't have a similar distribution scheme.
And AJI won't go into direct competition with Sky. There'll be some overlap, you're right, but I'd argue Sky is more of a domestic news channel circulated internationally; AJI will be a truly international news channel circulated international - a la BBC World/CNNI.

Anyone notice a tweaked newswall globe for sunrise? Hint of creamy yellow. Nice

I caught a glimpse of the afternoon edition of Sky News Today on Friday, which was presented by Juliette Foster, Allan King and Anjali Rao.
What an excellent combination they were, and in total contract to the usual trio who normally present the programme. I applaud Sky for trying out new people on that particular programme which, IMO, is one of the lower points of the new set up.
As most of you know, I rate Juliette very highly and have been frequently criticised on this forum for doing so. However, in comparison to the new lady who normally presents SNT PM, Juliette displayed a level of excellence that should be rewarded with moe prime exposure.

Interesting that today's Observer mentions Charles Allen and Trevor MacDonald celebrating Trev's decision not to go to Sky News, and instead stick with ITV.
There were rumours around here a while ago that Sky were trying to sign him up. God knows what for.
Presumably they are still very much on the prowl for big names.
On the subject of big names, did Eammon Holmes actually appear on Sky News for the George Best thing yesterday? I'd have thought he'd be the obvious candidate to appear on Sky all the time presenting this story, but I've not seen him at all. Presumably he isn't the sort of person who is prepared to drop everything and go to work.
Lazy tw*t.
