Sky could do what CNN did, and launch a "Headline News" channel, for those 15 minuters, and for those background screen watchers, and keep the featured programming, and in-depth analysis for Sky News proper.

With respect, that concept has been done before and it failed (e.g. the ITN News Channel). Indeed, the idea is dated to such a degree that even CNN Headline News have moved away from that format now with heavily branded programs like 'Morning Express w/ Robin Meade', Nancy Grace, Glen Beck, Showbiz Tonight et al. They also now show re-runs of Showbiz Tonight in the morning at 11am.

CNN Headline News is a good example to work with though, as it shows what Sky News could achieve with very little money. Take the Morning strand - Morning Express - it has Robin who is obviously the main anchor, it has a news summary presenter, a weather presenter, a showbiz presenter and a sports presenter too. Sound familiar???

Robin moves around the studio and has nice little chats with the various people before letting them do their thing. Which really wouldn't be that hard to in the sky news centre.

Yes, they were great together before. I miss this Sky News and the shot of 2 presenters with the new background looks really good.

Personally I loathe it, it looks bad on the single presenter shot and just as bad on the dual shot. Gimme the globe any day.

On a more postive note I see that they are being less rigid about going to the break at xx:54, I've now seen a couple of times where they are staying right through til the weather.

I think the background looks very nice with a 2 presenter shot. However, I think it looks a bit boring being used all day, every day. It further destorys the different branding for programmes. Remember Sunrise had the orange and peach added to the globe, the Sky Report had the scrolling text etc. Now with just this background, all that can be added is a large logo, like Afternoon Live uses.

Also, why doesn't the desk turn to the globe anymore? Fair enough it may turn during the early morning for Sky World News, but I really liked when it turned for 6pm hour when Jeremy and Anna anchored. It sets a nice atmosphere, it just looks really nice on screen. Now we see it at the TOTH for Afternoon Live, for all of about 5 seconds. It's such a waste! As is the mezz, and the shoebox, and even the CSO screen, which isn't used for the weather anymore, apart from the 12:58 weather before Afternoon Live. Watching a video on the Virtual Newsroom a few weeks ago, Lisa Burke was explaining the CSO screen, and the shot that was used made the studio look really big, as the camera wasn't fit to the CSO, but you could see the fins above it and to the left of it.

I hope there's a new schedule this year, and new graphics, as rumoured. But most of all, I BEG!! Mr.Ryley and the bosses to use the studio more! It's so easy to do, but they just don't do it!

I agree with everything you are saying. From my point of view I've always been very keen on heavily branded atv programming, from a production point of view (not taking into account fiscal constraints) it is sooo easy to do, as once you get into the groove you know exactly what your aims are, the stories to cover, and how you are going to cover those stories. Your news agenda is somewhat defined - which is quite nice.

Now, it is easier to brand programs when you have figure heads, people who are well known to the audience etc, so from thier point of view I can understand the way that they have gone. BUT, the slots are just tooo long. You need to have 2 (may be 3) hour slots across the day.

I often think that people get carried away in wanting to create a cohesive look, people forget that you already have that in terms of the studio, which is pretty damn distinctive because of its size and nature. Because you have this set element I don't see why you can't have logos, specific newswall backdrops etc which give each strand an individual feel.

They are already starting to use the newswall more, but I have little faith especially after this new business backdrop that they have been using. Am I the only one that thinks the numbers scroll too fast?? Waay too much going on there!!

The lighting is also appalling these days too, although that may have something to do with the dark newswall i guess.

Do you think it would be better to have shorter slots but with a single presenter?

Also anyone know the story with Eamon Holmes and when his contract may be up?

There needs to be stronger branding. We have use of the cubed and original 2005 logo. It needs to be one, or the other.

Each programme needs a more exciting logo, I hate this current strict red and white, Helvetica Condensed font with some gradient over it. It looks very tacky. Sunrise should use other area's of the studio, the shoebox would be the best. If you look in the shoebox area, I'm sure theres another elbow type standing area, or it at least looks like it. The shoebox looks good, and doesn't make the other guests and presenters look squashed.

I can't see Eamonn leaving anytime soon, but he needs a co-anchor. Charlotte would do fine.

Sky Today, should also have a co-anchor, Dermot and somebody like Anna Jones would be great. They've both worked at the BBC in the past, so I would imagine would know each other and would get on. I'd also shorten the programme down till 3 hours, 9am till 12. The studio should also be used more, even presenting from the newsroom desks behind the desk, which would look a lot like the old SNT before the 2005 relaunch.

I'm not going to go into a full scale imaginary schedule, but I'd bring back Lunchtime Live, with Kay, but keep the news summaries. Also, for the sports, something different. Instead of Kay and the sports presenters talking at the elbow, why not sit infront of the desk? I seem to remember in one of the 2005 promo's Kay was sat infront of it, and the mini-newswall on the desk had the Lunchtime Live logo on, and it looked like a very nice shot.

This is what I meant:

Bluntly. Yes.

EDIT: Should make myself clearer. Short slots of about 1-2hrs. A greater use of sport, weather business presenters, to add to the feeling that it IS more of a team effort.

Headline summary presenters at key times of the day, e.g. brekkie, lunch and din-dins.

EDIT 2: I'd also like to see them attempt a tag-team type thing around the newsroom, may be instead of Sky Today.

I'd expect some changes in the coming months, very similar to CNN's look. Watch this space I say. Surprised

We might even see the return of the 2005 logo with the odd tweak. Who knows! Surprised
