I'm sorry but how on earth can graphics take "months" to make.
You can understand if it's a big relaunch that the whole package could take quite some time so the rebranding company can justify their fee, but when we're just talking graphics I can't see how it would take more than just a few weeks to get them designed, made and tested - even if after all that they didn't want to get htem on to screen immediately.

It could take months, if they don't know what they want from the graphics yet. There wont be any re-branding company as it all seems to be done in house (except for music). They work on the new graphics whilst working on the day to day graphic requirements of the channel, and then the graphics are loaded and tested, and altered and retested.
I have a feeling, there is a basic idea being worked on, they could be waiting on new equipment, a new Sky News logo and brand designed by another dept, and more likely, they are waiting to see BBC News 24's new look, so as not to use something which could be described as a look-a-like or copy. Think of it as two women arriving to the party with the same outfit, embarrassing?

Well surely it's better to get their look out first and then if they're similar, News 24 be the copy (I don't think that rebrand will be as big as anoyone's predicting!) rather than wait until they've launched and then start again from scratch.
As you say about the two women in the same dress - you just need to make sure you get to the party first!

Or - you have to wear the dress better...

I think Martin has really nailed it there, and Brekkie one thing that you have failed to take into account is the politics of it all. One end of the organisation may have one idea (e.g. the split screen a la Sky Sports News) but the graphics department will have other ideas given how impractical it is to have a split screen in a 16:9 frame.
I also think that the last graphics set they've had have largely been an embarassment for them really, they have not been able to find a cohesive look and have only really kept the graphics for the smallest amount of time. Do not assume that they have brought in an outisde agency either. They did this in 2005 for their first set of graphics (not seen on air) and they were a major league cock up, universally hated.

I've found the laptops they are now using - and yes, in true sky they're HPs. Actually I feel a right tit as it was so easy to find on the HP website, but it wasn't until last night when I went onto the sky news website and saw Orla's Budget analysis ( here ) that it clicked. I'm sure they're the ones.
Also in Orla's vt's an interesting view of the mezz which looks positively **** compared to what it looked like in 2005.
