What a silly thing to say.
Why, BBC One wants viewers just as much as five! Pointing out where more news is available is not the same as saying "go watch another channel now!". Just saying something like, "For more on this story watch Five News at 7:30 or for the latest news, 24 hours a day there is Sky News on freeview channel 82, or Sky channel 501"

And how often did Channel 4 News namecheck the ITN News Channel, or later, ITV News Channel... oh wait, they never did. Surprising that.

well five hasn't got one of its own, and so the fact it's news provider has a 24hr channel, why not promote their channel, and have one up on Channel 4 and itv which has no 24hour options...

You still don't get it do you? If people are watching Sky News , they are not watching Five , are they? Why the hell would you direct viewers to a rival if you were in charge of a channel?

I have to say I'm with Martin on this one...
But Channel 4 news is a completely different kettle of fish. There you have a news service respected to such an extent that the government is even thinking about using some of the licence fee to subsidise it.
I think that five news could beneift from skys reputation behind it a bit more to be honest.
Five news is a weak brand, Sky News is considerably stronger.
EDIT: Jugalug, how you can say sky news and five are rivals is beyond me. One shows endless repeats of CSI, the other is a rolling news channel. Something tells me their demographics are going to be ever so slighly different. Get a grip.

If there are 10 people watching TV - 5 for Sky and 5 for Five,
Five then tell people for more news tune tune to Sky News and 3 people turn over that will mean 2 people are left watching Five and 8 are watching Sky.
With only 2 people watching they will get less add revenue than if there were 5 people watching.
The same for Sky, if there are 8 people watching they will get more add revenue than if 5 were watching.
Thats how they are rivals. They both want us to be watching their TV channel not a channel run by another company.
Also, if their demographics are 'slighly' different what would be the point in telling them to turn over as nobody would be interested.

But there you are making the false assumption that the people that watch five news will want to watch MORE news. By tuning to five for their daily fix they have already opted away from traditional and far more respected news service such as the BBC and ITV/ITN, thus indicating it is may be not news after all that they are in fact after - more tittle tattle.
Sky News and five aim their product at completely different demographics, if they were to turn over through curiosity then they would more than likely NOT stay tuned for long and they wouldn't go back again in the future, they would stick to five.
OK, yes, they are rivals in that they are both commercial broadcasters, but surely this situation merely raises the same questions as France24 broadcasting adverts on sky, cnn and aljazeera.
The fact is that sky news should be putting their little brand about a bit more, and making a bigger thing of the fact that they produce the five news bulletins would be a cheap and effective way of doing this.

But the fact remains that even if Sky want to make a big thing of producing Five News, those in charge of Five won't let them because that would be advertising a rival broadcaster and giving them the oppurtunity to gain viewers - If you were in charge of Five why would you let that happen?

They are doing it on the five news website with the Boulton&co blog, why can't they do it on tv?
