I've said before I'd launch a "Live at Nine" spin-off with Jeremy Thompson back for an hour at 9pm, and then launch a new evening programme from 6-9pm which could include the 15-minute bulletins say on the hour and half hour, but with features and extended sport, business and entertainment bulletins at points in between - and probably even space for a 15-minute version of Sky.com/news at some point during the 3 hours.

but don't you realise a lot of the changes they made were also about saving money and abiding by budget cuts?
your pontificating is all very well but I'm sure I've read that their ratings for the 15-min bulletins are the same, if not better than before - and it's a lot cheaper to broadcast.

Anybody got an aspirin? It appears Mr Ryley's had a knock on the head recently....

Read this Indie article, from the 4th September 2006;

Quote:
As head of Sky News, I want to enhance our reputation for offering world-class breaking news; to build on Sky News' reputation as an on-demand new media organisation, and to develop our exceptional talent on screen and off it. People need to view Sky News as a brand that offers dynamic news content on television, radio and internet across a variety of platforms, however and wherever they want.

I conceed he has really done this very well, the website is now alot better than it was and everything well, fits.

Thumbs up, enthusiastic pat on back and a french kiss.

A brand is a promise.

Woah. Stop there. A brand you say? Well, first you have to actually MAKE the brand, and I do believe that when you started back in the summer of 2006 you destroyed several good brands, that had their own logos and general presentation style in the form of Sky News Today, Sunrise, Live at 5, Lunchtime Live (although granted that has remained in tact). Oh, right, i see they weren't the brand that you wanted...well, I'll have to give it to you in that case, you've done well to create a brand that represents staid, cluncky, boring, pathetic, overpaid sh!t. Fab.

Oh, stop it, stop it. I've just p!ssed myself. Yeah, 'cos Sky Today's REALLY original 'innit.

I accept that 15 minutes has really been a bit of a success for them, pulling in decent numbers.

What are the numbers? I've not seen anything to suggest the 15 minute wraps are doing well.

Apart from the mid Christmas/New Year week when the 15 minute wraps got over 100,000 and filled 3 of the top 10 slots, you have to go back to September 2007 to find an entry in the Sky News Top 10 for those and that was at Number 8 week ending 23rd September with an audience of 76,000 viewers.

They did well when they were fresh and different. Now, they seem to trail behind Live at Five and weekend Sunrise by a long way. The latest figures indicate that they get less than 62,000 viewers, which is what the number 10 slot, the second hour of Live at Five on a Monday, got.

It would appear Sky News is not losing viewers,N24 are simply gaining new ones.

For example SN had a share of 0.4% for the w/e 14th Jan 07,0.5% share for w/e 15th Jan 06 and for the w/e 13th Jan 08 the share is 0.4%.

And the figures in the top tens on Barb do not appear to be going down.

IIRC Sky News was in blanket coverage mode at that time, covering the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, hence the reason for the higher than usual rating.

Gillian is currently on Maternity leave.

That doesn't really make a difference, the fact is that more people chose to watch 15 minutes rather than Sunrsie or Live at 5 over that period. Now whilst this doesn't really suggest there is a place for them during weekdays, there does appear to be justification to have them on at weekends and during holidays etc.

Yes but News 24 is Sky News's main rival so if their viewers are increasing you would hope SN's would increase accordingly. But they aren't... which is a problem.

If Sky ever hopes to regain the news channel crown they need to do something now and start winning new viewers and winning their old one's back!

I could see why people may watch News 24 over Sky News sometimes (emphasis on showbiz stories - Britney and constantly repeating everything all the time) but News 24 is still so wooden and boring to watch.
