So they don't do any headlines at 8pm then?

What seems a bit risky to me is bunching all these appointment-to-view slots up against each other - gives them even less flexibility if something important happens, and just delays how long you have to wait for 'normal' news (particularly when 7-8pm contains extended reports and 8-9pm is entirely international).

Of course, you could go to News Active. But I suspect the majority of viewers still see all interactive services as just a gimmick.

It would have been interesting to see Rubin try to cover Liverpool

Now I know SKY News has ATV I am switching between BBC N24 and ITVNC for 'rolling/breaking' news.

ITVNC just spent the first 4 minutes covering the train derailment at 20:00 - no pics but just some maps and telephone reports.

SKY mentioned it but everytime I turned over there didn't seem much to keep me watching.

Agreed. I think WNT should be moved to 9 and they should have normal news from 8-9.

Rubin :- Is he wooden or just out of his depth?

On a general point -
Bearing in mind the considerable changes of personnel and the new studio how many 'dry runs' have BSkyB done of these ATV shows? Surely some of the obvious rough passages could have been removed at that stage.

Has anyone opened a book on whether James Rubin will still be presenting next week? I hadn't realised QUITE how awful he was... Does he read ANY scripts before he reads them on-air? (He should be writing the stuff if he has all day to prepare...)

The contrast with Julie in the hour before - and between him and the reporters on tape and in the field just makes it worse. It is positively painful to watch.

For someone who must have watched a lot of TV he doesn't seem to have picked up on any of the grammar - like thanking guests at the end of interviews... The scared bunny in headlights look is really un-nerving.

Agreed, and whenever he thanks a sports presenter for their segment and gives a timid 'Thanks, Steve' as instructed by the autocue, it clearly drives in he just isn't cut out for this.

An addition to the Rubin debate; Has he never watched his wife on CNN?

And a slightly tasteless 'send images to us by email' message flags up, within 10 minutes of the incident happening.

I don't think that's tastless at all. People sent in mobile footage after the London bombings in July. What's the difference between that and having TV news cameras there?

Well, I certainly wouldn't just send it in. Think about it - it helps them to reduce their costs of buying pictures by getting eye-witnesses to send the images in for free.

If a news channel wants my images - they'll have to pay for them like every other outlet has to.

That last weather report looked great on the new newswall. The shot was so wide you could see half way around the world.

Still lots of radio mic problems today I notice.
