Big interview with Dermot in the Independent today:

It was interesting that he was chosen ahead of Trevor McDonald to give the blanket coverage of the death of Diana.

Do you really think they could get Trevor out of bed at 3am in the morning?

Was Trevor actually involved in any coverage that day - I don't really recall him being involved.

Remember it was a bank holiday weekend - so the 'main' presenters on all channels were likely to be away/out of the country.

Lunchtime Live was deemed a ratings success - and it was. One of the few that really did succeed, and was funnily enough the only strand to remain close to it's 2005 model.

Last year though, something happened, and a certain bright-spark decided it would be best if they could get Kay to do another two hours and move her to mid afternoon. Wrong move.

A sample of why I think Afternoon Live should be dropped.

Quite interesting. Seems a fairly plaussible argument to me as to why Afternoon Live is failing. However, just can't see them returning to Lunchtime Live

One thought....why dont they devise an on-screen graphics set up that manages to convey the weather, FTSE latest etc... then Kay could continue in her show...Something similar to Sky Sports News, but with obvious changes...just a thought

Well US networks most have a box like Sunrise's for weather, business and i think Fox also do sports scores. Could be quite a good idea, as IMO, despite the obvious, it does make the straps look alot better.

If this was done on the big screen this would work (I think). However it could be seen as to distracting... Would this be instead of them atually having dedicated business and weather updates? If so this could put people wanting those off sky...

Kay's "headline" interviews are generally boring.

I've noticed that within the space of ten minutes from 4:50 to 4:58, there is a "coming up" notice 3 times. The first is with Jeremy at 4:50 saying what's coming up on Live At 5, the second is 4:54 when Kay Burley reiterates what's coming up and then again at 4:58, Jeremy will tell us what is coming up on Live At 5.

I know Sky News has a reputation of repeating itself, but this surely is ridiculous and more importantly, bad television.

That along with the whole "on our website sky.com/news...blah"

I don't mind the odd plug for their website, but before virtually every ad break is just OTT.

Im going to stick my neck out and say that that Sky should stick with the one presenter format...it still needs work to it, but also needs the right sort of presenter....Kay can be good (though she seems to waffle a lot these days) but i dont think that she suits such a long slot...was far better on Lunctime Live.

The one presenter format also distinctive...if slightly *clunky* in the way it operates at the mo...but if it did return to 2 anchors, this would merely provide more of the same in such a small market place, at least at Sky they are trying to create a more distinct output as opposed to the more traditional rolling news style of News 24.

Though I do agree that Sky Today is a bit dull in comparison to the 2002 days...perhaps with the arrival of Dermot it may take on a more *Live with Alastair Stewart* a la the ITV News Channel format...which did work!

Oh, and the 15 min format....to be fair there isnt much of an audience to grab in the mid-evening slot, so the 15 mins thing seems OK, though, perhaps more of an effort with something at Nine or a revamped News at Ten?! John Suchet....now that he's done with Five, perhaps a bi-weekly 9pm interview show?

Oh. I written a lot Embarassed Laughing

really good interview. interesting that he says he left BBC Breakfast because the hours meant he was unable to see his children growing up - I seem to remember him using the same line when he left ITN's evening bulletins.

I agree with you largely. I do like the idea of having one dominant presenter and one that tends to take a back seat in things (although with a bit more of a role than at present and their name in the v/o). The reason why I like it this way is that you have a clear hierarchy, and you don't have the Tim Willcox / Johnathan Charles situation where they are both trying to speak over each other.

I think that in the evenings 15 minutes is ok, but really I would like 15mins of news, sport, showbiz, business etc. That way of the little audience there is to pull you can pull them in pretty quickly and then you don't have to worry too much about trying to retain them for excessive periods of time.

I think there is something to be gained in trying to nab the Newsnight viewers before newsnight starts. Have something like the sky report from 10 'til 11;30 when you'd have the press preview (same presenter and essentially same branding). I think News at Ten is something that sky should try to drop. They set ity up in the wake of ITV moving it and now it's time to end it.

Rather than polished reporting as such - I'd try to keep the same level of stories covered on the report and on newsnight, but have more guests - make use of Tim Marshall and Adam Boulton, both are incredible.

The problem I have with daytime is that everything is too long. They need to use presenters currently tied up in the evenigs; Anna Botting and Martin Stanford, and put them on during the day.

Dermot's started on Sky News then, good to hear he's calling it Sky News Today, and not just Sky News!
I noticed both sport and business have been preseted from the left side of the desk, so the globe is in the background with guests to the right, facing the fins/newsroom.

Kay Burley just read about a sentence on the top story, before telling us what was coming up, at 13:01! She then handed to Jason for the headlines.

Just noticed the Decision Time USA graphic is now filling the whole of the newswall, the newsroom background is only seen through gaps in the red lines.
