And in utter desperation they've turned to interviewing a taxi driver called 'Jim'.
Two important points - the BBC's regional set-up gives them a clear advantage, and one which they are finally using. But also, Barney Boo is right - how can you tell the importance of breaking news when you don't know the full extent of what has happened? So therefore, how do you know when to interrupt an ATV programme? The whole point of a breaking news channel is that it breaks whenever anything happens, which isn't possible under the current schedule.
And a slightly tasteless 'send images to us by email' message flags up, within 10 minutes of the incident happening.

I don't think that's tastless at all. People sent in mobile footage after the London bombings in July. What's the difference between that and having TV news cameras there?

In Sky's defence, I think they are covering it OK - not brilliantly, but alright.
There isn't much to say on the news, so switching between reports seemed to work OK, but Julie has been umming, and erring all over the place tonight.

You can't help but think that News 24 are cleverly trying to exploit the situation, by going all out on even fairly minor breaking news.
I mean, train derails and they knew there were no injuries etc very soon after the report. I think under normal circumstances they wouldn't be going wall to wall on it... they're just trying to take the advantage. Can't blame them for that.
Sky seem to be really hampered by technology (ironically, given how much they've spent on it).
