I was surprised at the choice of Live at 5 for the Sky Three simulcast- since this channel is going 24 hours, I really think they should stick Sunrise on Sky Three and keep live at 5 on the news channel only.

I guess Sunrise being simulcast on Five means that is probably less likely to happen?

Not really, they only show Sunrise on a Saturday now I think. Strange really, I thought both Five and Sky would be keen to maybe show the whole of Sunrise throughout the week. Would be very good competition for GMTV and an excellent advertisement for Sky News.

Surely the idea is to make the channel more watchable for a longer period of time. I think before the amount of time the average viewer watched Sky News was something ridiculous like 6 minutes. Not enough to guarantee a decent number of viewers to be carried over into the ad’s.

I personally am finding the new format far more watchable. The rolling news cycle prevented me from ever having the inclination to watch for more than 15 minutes at time. I now find I can happily have the channel on for a good deal longer.

The awkwardness of some of the three presenter line ups will disappear as time goes on. We just have to give it time and as far as I’m concerned, I’m surprised its working quite as well as it is this early on. The dodgy catchphrases during live at 5 will no doubt be dropped over time, but you have to expect this kind of thing early on in a new look where they are testing new ideas and approaches. As has already been mentioned, there were a a few of them in 2001 that were hastily dropped within a few days.

The Sky Report is the best addition so far IMO, it is a nice departure from rolling news and is genuine appointment to view TV rather than the same news with simply a more high profile presenter. The reports filed so far have been handled very well, last nights in particular was shocking, but not because the team were necessarily pursuing the shock factor. It was tastefully handled and I cannot imagine the BBC quoting the use of the word ‘Fag’ in the context it was on Sky last night on News 24. It was very powerful stuff.

Jamie Rubin…hmmm…yeah he needs time I guess. The autocue and questioning are his problems, but this will (I’m sure) develop as time continues.

Unfortunately for us, our views are fairly irrelevant on the whole. We’ll watch news no matter what because lets face it, its what we like to watch. Sky is clearly trying to pursue the great swathe of people who don’t watch news and would never consider turning to Sky News. It’s a very shrewd move especially as BBC News 24 has had 8 years to do the very same thing and have simply not bothered.

It is interesting that some of you now find the overnight news more engaging. I wonder if that was the intention? Desk based news will now seem more of a novelty as opposed to the ‘same old…’

Sky News has spent the past 3 years in particular developing somewhat of a cult status for itself and this (as far as I can see) is simply the next stage.

Oh and you have to love Francis's new introduction....after three;...one....two....three...............'HI THERE!'

Time for me to have my say on the new look.

To be honest, I don't mind the new look. Just too much white used, i.e. the astons, perhaps they should have had a different colour for the background and used white for the text. The logo, clock and live straps look quite good as well. Watched it for a couple of minutes the other day, and it seems a bit strange with three presenters by the giant plasma screen! The sports bulletin should be made a bit longer cus it does seem a bit rushed.

Ah well, guess its back to watching N24...... Very Happy

Yep - the overnight service does now stick out. The desk based presentation (albeit a very nice desk with a very nice newswall backdrop) and decent levels of news content make it far more watchable for me than the daytime stuff.

You're right. Although I'm not sure about the new boy coming in. Why's Martin Popplewell on overnights? I miss good old Kevin Owen and the legendary Gordon Radley. I know it's kinda weird, but when I was cramming for my final year at Uni, I would switch on through the night and it was nice to know someone else was awake. It's a very 'personal' time of day and the format is great.

I want Gordon on as soon as possible, expecially when doing the paper review he refers to the nudity on the front pages of the tabloids as "heavy, as you can see there." Smile Plus, Martin seemed to be continually looking at the wrong camera last night and not making any effort to correct himself.

As for Sunrise this morning, hmm. I'm not going to go on and on, but Eamonn's a joke. Talking about Jimmy Osmond taking part in 'I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here' the reporter said it was rumoured that he had been offered £100,000 to go on the show - the highest amount ever. Eamonn chips in, "Ha. You think that's a lot? If only you knew how much they were offering me to go on the show, mate!" What an arse. I sensed a polite laugh on Lorna's part when he then suggested she looks like Camilla.

Oh yes, and the news. Again, where was it?
- 7.58: Headlines and Coming Up
- 8.00: Ident
- 8.01: Headlines and Coming Up
- 8.03: End of titles and walking around
- 8.04: Headlines and summary of stories begins

The stories were also that thing about the Osmond, Camilla's fashion (same footage and jokes used by Eamonn twice within as many minutes) and the National Television Awards.

The only good thing is that they did get that huge studio. Eamonn's ego would never have fitted in the old one.

Has Eamon gone over to Sky on similar terms to those he was on at GMTV ?

ie. a 4 day week and 4 months off.

I'm sure it's a 4 day week as Steve Dixon is doing Sunrise on Friday - I think?

why are you rushing to such judgements after one day?

Because the re-launch is rubbish, style over substance, and the channel has next to no viewers.
Who cares if it is, is aspiring to, or will never be the best news channel on television? Most people get more in-depth, varied, and updated news online.
What we are judging here is not the success of the studio re-launch (which looks beautiful and graphics whiz-bang, etc..) but whether the channel, after the most significant re-launch in its history, has secured its multi-channel future?

From my point of view, I'm just jealous that I haven't got 40 million pounds to burn.
I'm not sure BSkyB will be so willing to sign checks for that amount when it loses the premiership rights and all that lucrative subscription money.

What a pile of absolute twaddle.

First of all, ''most'' people don't get their news online.

What are you, a fortune teller? You're arguing that it's not secured its future based on 47 hours and 10 minutes of news coverage?

The channel has always had next to no viewers... what did you expect, that suddenly the world and his wife would turn on Sky News yesterday morning and never leave it again? If more than 2% of the UK population have actually heard that Sky News has relaunched I'd be amazed. Given that the average viewer sticks around for 3 minutes, even they probably haven't noticed either. The point of the relaunch is to change that... not overnight. If Sky wanted a huge relaunch with loads of people tuning in on the first day they'd have spent a **** load on advertising the thing, not just left it up the Guardian and the Independent (a combined audience of 600,000 out of 60 million, probably about 100,000 of which read the articles and 50,000 of them had access to Sky News, and 5,000 had ever watched it).

well said cat. I was disappointed by the relaunch but you can't make a judgement on a few hours. Things will settle down and changes will be made. The British public are notorious for hating change. When the BBC1 balloon disappeared thousands were in uproar, now the dancers are well liked. But Peter Fincham has said he wants to change them, so expect another huge outcry.

Since when?

I don't think anyone (and I'm talking about members of this forum) would ever say, "Hey, remember the dancers? They were great and iconic.."

Do I detect a note of sarcasm? The point is that when the dancers are taken off there will be an outcry but when they first came on they were hated. It's not a caseof whether they are really well liked or not, more a case that people like what they know and don't like change.
