Er, Sky News already is a pay channel on cable. On cable, if you pay no subscription, you get nothing!

As for satellite, it would be a pity, as it would almost certainly mean an end to the channels availability on satellite outside of the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (excluding such varients as Sky News Australia/NZ, of course). I'm sure Sky News provides a useful way for UK ex-pats to keep in touch with news at home, and I'm not sure what benifit making Sky News subscription has for Sky. (Which of course was among the reasons why 18 years later Sky News is the only one of the original Sky line-up which is still FTA).

Well, I'm sure Sky News being encrypted has absolutely nothing to do with the launch of Freesat next year. Sky wouldn't be anti-competitive now, would they?

Always annoys me though how they use a pic from Sky News to promote their "News and events" mix - although Sky News is (currently) available free - as their disclaimer states.

Sky as also closing to new launches (other than the existing list, which is full of crap channels, radio and plus 1's) So no Virgin/ITV news channel, Setanta Sports News or anything else.

What does this mean? Are you saying that the Sky platform isn't allowing any new channels? I think Ofcom would have something to say about that.

Its down to a memory issue with some older Digiboxes and Sky worry that they won't be able to cope.

Set top boxes which only had to cope with 200 services at the launch of Sky Digital now have to store information on almost 1000, taking into account regional variants and interactive services. Sky advised that while they are continuing to improve their software in an effort to use memory more efficiency, they will shortly exhaust all software-permitted gains.

So I suppose another way of looking at it is: People with older boxes may have to have them replaced

I wouldn/t get too worried about it. It's basically just because there is literally SO many services on Sky now that the boxes are struggling to cope. What they have said is that they'll encourage companies to 'trade epgs'. So Setanta Sports News, etc will probably still make an appearance. They'll just have to buy EPG space from one of the crap channels. Channel 4 was already rumoured to be in talks to do this with the Life channels because, despite being terrible channels, they have pretty good EPG numbers.

They did do this. That's how they got C4 +1 onto 135, and managed to move More4 +1 down to be next to the main channel.

I agree that this shouldn't be a major problem, and might just end up meaning less of the psychic/dating/shopping rubbish.

Looks as though they are holding out for a possible election announcement to alter the toth/music.

If Gordon Brown does not call an election,do we know if the changes will still be made?

Sky News is no longer pay TV on cable in the UK, since the creation of Virgin Media, Sky pulled all their channels apart from sport and movies.

Sky didn't pull their channels, they just put the price up and Virgin Media decided not to pay. Smallworld Media still has it as part of their Base pack for example.

I was told the reason the toth and music changes were not introduced was because of the possiblility of an election.

So it would make sense that they would appear tomorrow,if not i doubt they will ever be used.
