Sky News Australia/NZ Have changed their lower thirds, alot better than UK and what I was expecting.

Animations are far better than Sky News UK too.

Wow, they look so much better. They did the right thing keeping the Sky News Box down there.

How would I vote? Do I literally text Vote About Right rather than Vote B ? Maybe Vote Green ?

Interesting point, as a viewer of the channel and I want to vote, I usually do online.. but I've never thought about how to text it in.. maybe they should make it A, B, C or D

This "lower third down under" relaunch seems to have taken the best bits of the old and the new.

They just showed a "Breaking News" strap and it has the same height (and nifty animation) but changes the flat white area to a shiny red just like the area below.

In fact all the new graphics take up three lines, unlike before, where it was always two-double-height lines (because Sky News Au didn't implement the 2005 relaunch properly, and always had double height text for everything). Basically a win-win there for on-screen clutter. A couple of pixels added to the bottom strap to line up with UK now.

The animations on Aus/NZ are different to UK. There's no boxes turning, etc, just new sliding effects. Very Happy

No sign of any "Impact" font being used, either.

The old logo needs the shine treatment though, and a bit of a shift to the left to line things up. Also, like in the UK, a bunch of elements were left untouched in a half-hearted attempt. "Coming Up" and "Headlines Every 15 Minutes" still have all their blue colours, with the white stick on the left. The little red or white sticks remain on all the other on-screen elements too. The "Live" bug remains flat (and on the left, but that makes sense to keep the interactive bugs on the right).

But overall, it's quite a relief to be honest.

i don;t know i anyone has brought this up by as 'breaking news' is used for rather minor events nowdays, is there another level up for major events, for example on the scale of the london bombings or similar. im not very familiar - is there some sort of newsflash strap or somethng?

Yep, since all news is now broken news, there's still:

- Newsflash
- News Just In
- Developing Story
- News Alert (this is what should be used more often ... like a press conference on its way)

(NB, I'm not saying Sky News uses all these ... though AU/NZ uses the last one a lot).

The BBC is planning a day of action tomorrow (Thursday 12 April) to highlight the plight of Alan Johnston, BBC Gaza correspondent, who was abducted on 12 March 2007.

The day of action will see for the first time, the four major international news broadcasters will come together to produce a special programme.

The BBC's two TV news channels - BBC World and BBC News 24 - together with Al Jazeera English and Sky News will simulcast the programme, and there will also be contributions from CNN.

As part of the day's activity, for the first time, a simulcast programme will go on air from 2.30 to 3pm anchored by Jeremy Bowen, the BBC's Middle East Editor, from Ramallah.

It will incorporate packages from the BBC, Al-Jazeera, CNN, and Sky. It will also have live reports from BBC, Al-Jazeera and Sky anchors and correspondents in Ramallah, Gaza and London.

The programme will look back at events in the month since Alan's disappearance and will include background packages on day-to-day life in Gaza as well as the increasing threats facing journalists working in danger zones around the world.

Sky will opt out at 1445 off the back of a sting made up of all the broadcaster's titlers sequences. The BBC are looking after this.
