Did anyone see the McCartney-Mills court case story?
They showed the joint statement on screen, and large chunks of the sentence were obscured by the .... wait, which channel am I watching? I keep forgetting. Gee I must be stupid.
EDIT: Interestingly, Sky News Aus/NZ must have been getting a clean feed the whole time, probably even before last week's changes. The story has just gone to air as part of the local bulletins, and it has no tower logo in the way at all. The same has been true of every other UK-based story too, it seems.
CK.
Sky News Au have access to clean feeds from UK and other sources. Its just cheaper for them to rip Sky News UK's stories straight off and cover whats necessary.
Right, the spinning logo is really getting up my nose now!
I have alreay stated that I think that because there is absolutely no justification for the logo to spin, it is nothing but a gimmick.
Now I have seen two cases in which it actually gets in the way!
It was pointed out in an earlier post that it got in the way of the text of a statement on-screen last night and this morning. Hasn't one part of the graphics department given the other part "safe-area" details.
The case of obscuring text I really can't understand is the Headlines. Letters at the beginning of the headline text are actually covered by the blooming spinny logo.
For a man who has been watching Sky News for the past 18 years, I wonder if Mr. Ryley is actually watching now? Can he not see these glaring f**k-ups? Were they not noticed before the change? Who is the Senior News Director and what has he been checking out for the past few weeks?
"Evolution, not revolution"??
One step foreward - two steps back, more like!!
I must admit, the new Sky graphics have really grown on me, and I really like them now!
They have reduced more on screen clutter as breaking news is now sent to the thicker when it is not being discussed, and then only goes to the 'super' strap when being talked about.
My only niggle is that the time and date should change as the tower rotates, or the tower should show what 'programme' is on at the time, eg Sunrise, Sky News Today, Lunchtime Live etc.
Screen went all Virgin Media (i.e. black) during a report just there. Ian Woods' report on the petrol problems just after 5 yesterday evening failed to kick in as well - the frozen image was left on for a remarkable amount of time though! JT came in with a few quick puns to cover it up.
I do think that sending the breaking news to the ticker is a good idea, if only the ticker wasn't so big and, well, yellow. Surely though this goes to show that the ticker, when used normally, is pointless. The red button has all the info, plus more, that one needs.
As for the spinning cube, the noise it makes needs to be as loud and noticeable as possible. Imagine the noise that the jib makes on News 24 as it moves about at the TOTH, except much louder - louder than the presenter, louder than everything else in fact. The spinning cube helps strengthen brand identity and needs to be noticed.
If you're looking away from the tv, you need to know it's still spinning, and that you're still watching Sky News. Having Sky News written in three different parts of the screen at one time is useless if someone has their back turned.
