I know I've just posted, but out of pure curiosity has antbody figured out which way the desk rotates, anti-/clockwise.
Rubin I think is a little bit over whelmed, but then again I would as well if I'd had trailers going out about my program in nearly every commercial break.
an ITV News theatre-of-news style video wall
larger BBC News 24-style lower third graphics that swish back and forth just like N24's
dull 2D font with no attempt at animation (e.g. Sky Sport's new football graphics - they animate but don't annoy)
itny LIVE banner at the top reminds me of N24 too
very small locator strap at top too
weather GFX nicked straight off the BBC
too much walking around and items being presented from different areas of the studio (it's the first day so I guess they are showing off and will settle down eventually).
In all not the innovative or groundbreaking look I had been expected - or been led to believe.
As for content: gypsies, race relations vote and Kate Bush! I hope it gets better than this!!!
I agree with all the points raised above.
I really like the studio set and the layout but have reservations whether it is 100% suitable for a rolling news channel? As a viewer I want to see someone reading the news and not extended segments like BBC News 24 do with Click Online etc.
The studio is great but I feel a bit unecessary for what they want to achieve, the graphics and astons are a huge improvement but don't seem to be 100% 4:3 protected!
Even though the studio is fab I find you don't know what to look at - do you look at the image on the SKY Newswall, the small presenters lurking someone in screen or just drool at the lights and furniture around the studio?
It does make BBC News 24 and ITV NC channels look stale but at least they are still providing a rolling news service* - currently watching SKY news with these segments would instantly make me turn over to another channel to catch up on the day's news - to me these segments are a turn off. The only subjects that warrant a separate segment could be the ITV News Network and a half hour sports round up each night. Otherwise the rest of the segments are bordering on This Morning or Tonight with Trevor Mcdonald.
I am positive about the relaunch but apprehensive about content and styling. Which is more important to the viewer?
Does anyone know yet how Sky News is now beeing shown on the international feed? Is it 14:9 or 4:3, and is the ticker still covered up?
I would expect it to be 4:3 - in 14:9 the bottom left dog would be cropped if it were present. Given that everything seems quite conservatively 4:3 safe then I suspect 4:3 centre cut will be the analogue compatible version.
On Sky News International, they are showing it in 4:3, with the ticker covered up with a static ticker caption with no ticker text, it just says Sky News on it, but the international breakfiller hasn't been updated, it still has the old Sky News logo and graphics
As to the presentation, it is absolutely brilliant, I love the new format, and more importantly it will help Eamonn lose a few pounds.

I thought the new Sky News clock is a 24hr one, but it isn't!
I think the astons are OK., why it reminded me of R.I.S.E, I don't know but it did, the light hearted segments did start a bit too early, they should cut down on the chit chat and restrict it to 15 mins I think on Sunrise.
As to the opening sequence, well I like the bit where the presenter walks off to their position, to me it means they are ready to rock, although you just hope that no one cocks that bit up by missing a step especially big Eamonn
I know I blather on about content over style, and people before me have commented on the agenda Sky followed today, so I'll just offer up this....
Breaking News - there were a fair few stories this morning which probably would have triggered Sky's "Breaking News" treatment in the past, but didn't this morning. And this afternoon, on the big breaking story of the day - the Baghdad bombs - News24 was several minutes ahead on the break of the story and the pictures of the blasts. Must try harder, Sky......!
As for why.... three possibilities. They're not used to the new setup. There's such a degree of automation, and rigidity in the camera moves, presenter positions and studio crew that it's much harder for them simply to crash to a breaking story. Or their threshold has gone up (doubtful).
It's interesting though how the channel's agenda changes through the day. Sunrise was trashy (a satellite van sent to a football pundit's house to talk about Wayne Rooney's birthday!!!), Daytime + The Sky Trevor, sorry - Report discussed at length above, then Rubin's show going very highbrow. How arfe the audiences going to react to this? It's unlikely anyone will follow them through the day then into the evening any more - the agendas are so diverse. So the overnight ratings out tomorrow, then the rest of the week, next week, next month, and onwards.... we'll see how it's working then. Sky have laid it all on the table today. The new head of BBC TV News has said his absolute top priority is News24. The battleground is getting a lot more interesting!
By the way, Rubin started his Blair interview mentioning at least twelve dead in Baghdad today, which broke at about 1610 on News24 and 1615 on Sky News. Quite a quick turnaround for such a long interview - must have had a director in Downing Street (who didn't mind cables in shot behind the PM!).

I suspect that the 'Iraq body count' was at least twelve prior to the Hotel bombings - unfortunately - and that the enhanced relevance is therefore coincidental.

I am sure Nick Pollard and his merry men did their research before they did this expensive relaunch.
Anyway I only watched Sunrise, they need to strike a fine balance between serious news and chit chat, as I said restrict it to 15 mins top, they did srart too early with Derek from Big Brother for example, Sunrise didn't seem to make as good use of the videowall either.
I am going to go and see Sky News International to see if they've updated their international breakfiller, will report back very soon!
My opinion of the new look is, I'm very impressed.
The graphics I really like, the studio I love!! The whole movement I love,
BUT
I went to watch Sunrise this morning, and to be honest, I did find it a bit hard to watch. Eamonn I felt was very good, he suits the job well seeing as he isnt taking over someone elses job, he is now the first person in this new format/studio.
I agree about the balcony, not really the best place for morning. I feel if they brough in something like a soft studio, instead of the balcony. That is fine for like the afternoon, but mornings need a sofa!!
I love the revolving desk, I love the the way the announcemnts are done at the top of the hour and the crane camera. The weather well I'm not fond of, the graphics are not brilliant. And I feel that they should do a RP screen instead of CSO.
Yes, I agree - the set is pretty spectacular and the graphics are very swish but for the first time (I think ever) I found myself switching to BBC News 24 for the "proper" news.
I can't get my head around how their running orders work... their top story isn't the main headline - like at 11am 'Wilma' was their first headline but the "main story" was Birmingham?!
And they spend more time telling us how they'll cover the news, rather than actually telling us about it.
On the big story of today, the Baghdad blasts - Sky News were very definitely a woeful second place. By my count News 24 had the pictures on the telly more than 5 minutes before Sky.
(And something else re their promos which feature clapper boards with presenters talking about their shows... surely if Sky News is always live, why the need for clapper boards? Is this a case of style over content - on Sky News? Shome mishtake shurely?)
Jesus. It's just hit me. I knew I'd seen those straps before.
The Day Today!
They animate in almost exactly the same way. Very worrying.
As for News 24 being top priority, blah blah blah. News 24 will never be top priority at the BBC because the top people don't work on it. Question Time, Newsnight, Panorama, not to mention the 1/6/10... that's where the Beeb's priorities lie, whatever the rhetoric Horrocks comes out with.
