sky news at 6 back facing the newswall. Sometimes i just wish they'd make up their mind, I mean i like it facing the globe, and now without wnt it doesn't get used much.
Anyway practicaly a year on the channel could not be more different, to the one that it set out to be. In some ways though its getting better, i've noticed that theres more international content creeping in which is good and todays taliban exclusive certainly proves there commitment to this - even if it is a bit.....well, creating the news rather than reporting it, but I can't help but feel that they needlessly scrapped something that was, in my opinion anyway, so good and so different.
A rare treat for me today, half term and a free day to see Sky News Today or 'Sky News'?!? as its known now according to the v/o, and a piece from the newswall. wow!, even if it was only using the three squares of video on the globe background my heart leapt for joy seeing that they still use it, and now there a globe thing of Iraq up infront of the desk with JT and Anna with views from Tim marshall and Adam Boulton - who could ask for anything more - news the way sky does it best.
Incidentally, I know the videos been up for a while, but looking on you tube today I re-found a old sky news today video, which has Ginny, Juliette and Martin presenting. Of course two of those would be sacked.

Quite a good idea actually, that is the one thing that i miss about the old studio, you actaully had what looked to be like the proper newsroom behind the desk rather than just a bank of pcs

Can't help put think that it would look significantly better if they turned the desk the other way, pointing towards the newsroom. It's a vastly more interesting backdrop. They could even just perch the presenters at the end of the desk and leave it in the usual position.

Sky News Today dont even use the "News, debate and discussion" tagline anymore! Its such a shame its not even called Sky News Today anymore. The weekday news is becoming much more like the weekend bulletins on Sky. In the past year I think on the presentation side its went downhill, as I have said many times before non of the things the relaunch was about, "Moving desk, newswall, upstairs" are used. The newswall is only used from the desk not close up with presenters. The newsroom is not felt anymore, computers just dont do it, they should have people on at the desks and even walking past the newswall like it was before. It seems dead!

I tend to disagree here. Its not that these elements have been ditched, its just that they have been scaled down. The desk still rotates of an evening, and the newswall, during the day, is usually used at least once. There is a little part of the newsroom based behind the desk and people can regularly be seen wandering or working behind, but i'd argue that this is hardly important.
What I would agree with though is that Sky are not using their brand new HQ to its full potential. Where everything was all over the place a year ago, now most is delivered from the desk, so effectively they have gone from one extreme to the other.
John Ryley has shaken things up, but i'll leave everybody to make up their own minds as to what impact he has made. In my opinion, all he needs to do is find a healthy medium in terms of presentation.
