anyone remember about a month or two back when juliette foster said "send us your booze" instead of views - popplewell then quipped something along the lines that she was an alcoholic or something, and juliette was quite taken aback by this and looked stunned. she was keen to stress she was not an alcoholic and popplewell was giggling and smirking! about the only time i've enjoyed watching popplewell tbh.

Juliette Foster is actually my favourite presenter on Sky News, and has been for some time. Elegant. Capable. Serious. Thorough. Knowledgable. Talented.

Now, I watched the whole 3 hours of SNT PM yesterday (Buckley, Longhurst, Dixon), and at the risk of sounding like a broken old record, the female presenter of the trio is sadly still not imporving at all. Having given the benefit of the doubt, I think it is time (as I mentioned a few weeks ago) to remove her two crutches and allow her to solo anchor the overnights, so that she is forced into handling BN on her own. Yesterday's attempt to handle a simple and late item of BN was pitiful, akin to someone who has just graduated from media college.

I hate to slag people off on this forum, as I always consider that everyone deserves a chance. But GB needs that little bit of solo experience to develop her further. Please Sky - give her that chance.

On the contrary, Anna Botting is truly magnificent on The Sky Report. Great programme yesterday. James Rubin even had a good night too last night!

Any news on the current ratings gap between Sky and News 24? I personally find it really hard to believe that News 24 are in the lead seeing as they just seem to plod along doing nothing very exciting, whereas Sky, for all their faults, do tend to put a lot more effort in and are a lot more watchable. In my opinion anyway.

The latest BARB figures ay Sky gets 8 mins a week and News 24 gets 9.

i agree about sky and news 24. for all it's faults sky are trying to do things differently, whereas news 24 seem to be getting worse and worse tbh. and the new graphics look terrible too.

It is true that Sky is trying new things, and it is commendable. I just watched a very interesting debate at the end of WNT about Iran, and that sort of thing is seen much more now. However, I also see an element of ineptitude in the new Sky News, producer Bob Mills is said to have quit because no-one knew what they were doing, but overall I think the post-relaunch problems are being ironed out.
No longer on Live at Five, for example, do we have the little segments such as where they turn the sound down and 'let the pictures do the talking', and also the showbiz review 'Out There' has gone from Live at Five. Basically, they realised a Fox Report style, over the top run down of the day's news wasn't going to be accepted by a British audience. So too, the afternoon Sky News Today no longer has the three presenters hunched around the newswall desk for the top story, which always looked ridiculous.
News 24, also, is a rip off, no other word for it. Sky announce a flagship 7 o'clock programme to showcase their best journalism, BBC put on News 24 tonight. Sky News Tonight, with a Press Preview, Sportsline etc. is launched, the Beeb launch Ten O'Clock News Hour. And now, the BBC launch this Huw Edwards slot, appointment to view, presenter led programming at Five, sound familiar?
I think News 24 deserved the News Channel of the Year award, but I wish they would innovate more, because then they could have a very good channel.

I prefered Sky News when they had the two presenters sat behind a desk; not only can i not get used to the 3 newsreaders thing they persist with, I've noticed just how much they've reduced the story count. Sky News Today must only really cover 3 stories per hour in any depth.

Yes, I'm noticing the reduced story count. The pre-relaunch SNT was great - fast-paced and comprehensive.

I don't have a problem with the three presenter thing per se, but the new SNT just lacks the pace and 'feel' of the old version.

As someone who rarely watches Sky News (because I just don't like their style) and instead is a regular News 24 viewer, I strongly agree with the sentiments above.

The BBC is supposed to be the innovator. It has no commercial pressure so can afford to take risks. But since commercial television was launched, BBC News has always played the safe card, and followed rather than led. News at Ten was pioneering, Nine O'Clock News was stiff & boring. Sky News have done some interesting things, and News 24 have copied. Don't get me wrong, News 24 has made some huge steps in recent years, but there's been too much copying.

It's about time BBC News 24 started to extend it's lead, do it's own thing, and innovate.

Yeah..Julia Somerville made the right moved back in 1987; jumping from The Nine O'Clock News to News at Ten. I think a lot of the personalities on the BBC are too stiff themselves. The likes of Louise Minchin and Sian Williams seem to have some spark beyond the newsroom. I also wish Moira had a more prominent role. I bet that if she was given her own slot on BBCN24 or was one of the MAIN anchors - she'd be a ratings winner!!

I wonder what sky's Budget coverage is going to be like this year?
So far today we've had boxing and archery. I wonder what else is in the bag? A virtual bar for drinking games (and the effect of taxes thereof?)
