I don't think there's anything surprising in Darroch's remarks there. The media landscape looks very different today compared to the 1990s. A rolling news channel is rather less "important" now, given people can grab snippets of news when and how they want it online (websites/social media, whether on their desktop PC or various mobile devices).

As I think I've said before, if Sky News -- as a TV news channel -- did not exist today, I doubt Sky would be contemplating setting it up. That doesn't mean though that it's irrelevant and that Sky will or should shut it down. Merely that the balance of benefits to costs has changed over time, and that -- from a commercial perspective -- the case for owning/operating a news channel is less compelling than in the past.

Whether or not it's a "tactic" in dealing with regulators is almost a moot point. Regardless of any merger, we're talking about a company that has to take shareholders' interests into account. Sky News costs them money; the question is, do they get sufficient benefit to justify that cost? The judgement to date has been, yes, it's more than worth the expense. But there's no guarantee that will still be the case 1 year, 2 years, 5 years from now.

It's also no secret they'll pay what they need to pay for the Premier League at all costs, and costs have been already been cut across Sky to help fund the current cycle of rights, and even though that suggests they've overpaid history tells us they'll pay even more in the next cycle to maintain their position in the sports rights market.

Could somebody tell me whether there was another episode of World View yesterday? I didn't watch yesterday and last week there was no World View but somebody posted it should be back this week.

The new look Sky News appears as a cost saving endeavour. Loosing higher paid, experienced presenters. Downsizing the studios.

They have also recently reduced from 2 permanently leased transponders to just 1 for their satellite OBs. Though these are becoming more and more over 3G/4G anyway.

Is this why the feeds are now SR 5000 instead of 10000?

Lighting in the glass box is back to what it was last year, the warm yellow lighting has been switched to the usual white and purple again.

That's very retrograde step in my opinion if that is permanent. The revised lighting was a massive improvement and made the glass box look far less clinical.

Who is in control of Sky News notifications, they really need to sort them out. Test notifications from last year, two near identical ones yesterday with one adding 'is', and then today a vague ambulance suicide bomber kills 17 that was corrected to include a location.

And there were 33 additional deaths at the time. Unfortunately it’s now at 63 dead.

Good views of the new newsroom and new gallery here that hasn't been seen before.

That gallery would make an excellent backdrop.
