BBC LDN were doing it years ago.... in fact they had a kind of double decked studio too
Hmm - but that was only because they didn't have a studio at all and had to make do with the space they had in an existing office space. Apart from some really dodgy camera angles when they started, and that stupid slowmotion walk down the stairs, effectively they were treated as two separate set areas, and not really linked visually effectively.
Yeah, that's why I said 'kind of' Although they did used to hand over by having the presenter at the top looking over the railings to the presenter at the bottom with accompanying reverse shot back up

You can't help but think, though - sorry, miserable alert - one of the things that has and still does set Sky apart compared to any other news channel out there (including the US networks) is the on-screen banter and chat with the presenters... putting them on two different storeys is hardly condusive to that.
Obviously they will not be apart for hours and hours, but it will break apart one of the things that has really made the channel what it is.
That said, new look cannot come too soon.

I wonder though, with all this two floors stuff and the additional strain it will put on technology, what will happen when the technology fails? How will the presenters hear each other if they're needing to hand between the floors?
Of course I'd picture it as a soft set on one floor and the newsdesk on the other.
Though if that's not the case and talkback fails they'll be shouting up and down to be heard...

University Challenge doesn't have a double decker set! The two teams are next to each other but the picture is split with one team on top & the other underneath.
Whilst this news is no doubt interesting to those of us interested in pres, I think it's going a worrying step further to the trashy American style news channels. Of course depends how it's done - the BBC election programmes come from huge sets, often with upstairs areas, and they manage to avoid Americanisation.

News from the stairs will be the fad to replace standing up no doubt.

"Six hundred and four, Toxteth O' Grady, USA."
Incidentally for one series of University Challenge in the Bamber Gascoigne era, one team WAS genuinely above the other, albeit 'stepped' back. It didn't work very well, and they reverted to the split-screen effect soon after.

Ta very much. February seems an awful long way off when, like cat says, Sky News SO needs a big refresh.

Timescale is not likely to be before February at the earliest, C5 is the priority right now. There are a number of presenting positions around the newsroom but there is a traditional 2 pres desk as well where the majority of the links will probably be read from.
