So there I was, watching News 24 earlier today when they had the sign language interpreter on screen but this time she was superimposed over a full screen, instead of the regular screen being shrunk into a box to her right. This was for the whole bulletin including the trailers just before 1:30, but not during the weather - this was still shrunk - and the astons were now in front of the interpreter.

But now that it's full screen, she's got in the way of the graphics - particularly the stats in the report on immigrants with HIV and tuberculosis, the coming up graphic which must have been rendered differently to the other astons, and later when the trailer for the various investigative journalism programmes was on she was obscuring part of the in-vision subtitles at the beginning. Doesn't the interpreter see herself on screen; couldn't she step to the side for a moment if she's in the way and not actually signing because there are in-vision subtitles?

Oh and they seemed to just fade her out before the sport which seemed a bit cruel. I hope she got to sign goodbye.

I'm not complaining. The interpreter provides a valuable service and if I didn't want to watch the news with signing I could have switched to any one of four other channels that were carrying news at the same time.

But surely the director at the time knows the bulletin is signed and therefore shouldn't be putting graphics behind her.

Maybe they are just trying things out and hopefully will reach a compromise.

Alright, Sorry DVBoy, I couldn't resist that one. (Ken Livingstone leaves room) I did see the signed edition. It was slightly confusing as the signing is only susposed to happen between 1 and 1.30. The women without that stupid background looks a lot better now. Although I keep have expecting the women to keel over, she looks half dead. Sorry once again if ive gone to far.

Laughing No it's fine. She is funny to look at. They would choose the biggest one to fill up as much of the screen as possible. What about that man with the goatee? Nah I don't think he looks serious enough for news!

Is News 24 the only UK news channel to provide this service? Its definatly better without the border behind her as its less intrusive. At least they coincide the signing on News 24 when another bulletin is available (One o'clock news) without signing so that you have an option. It is good that they provide it for people who need it.

No both ITV News and Sky news offer signing. The ITV News bulletins are normally signed after midnight. I am not sure what time Sky have there signed bulletins.

I'm surprised the stations don't have a red button option of having sign on or not. What I mean is that they should have it 24/7 as an option on BBCi.

I found a document a few years old that states that the BBC were working on technology to allow something like that to work. But I guess they haven't done it yet. Though what could be simpler than two video streams, one with signing, one without. It would work on Sky.
