I hope 5 news get a overall, its just a carbon copy of ITV news, mainly because of ITN.

Sorry - I meant the fact that you're saying that's down to the two being from ITN. The two are completely editorially independent. In fact, they're in two different buildings. People in ITV News don't talk to people in C5 News. I'm sure you'll find the running order for BBC News is similar too.

I'd like to see a 5 News show in prime time again. I remember when 5 launched in April 97 with Kirsty perched on the desk and walking round the newsroom talking to correspondants & when the had 5 news early they used to be innovative programmes. Now with a news at 5 pm & at 6.30 5 news will never get any traction with the chattering classes;

so

1/ keep the main show at 5

2/ move the 6.30 show to 8 or 8.30 or if that's not commercially viable to 11 or 11.30 there isn't really any really late night news on in the uk all ouside the news channels. 5 news late could show more adult oriented tabloidy news or even be a rival to the BBC & ITV

How would the panel view a late night news from 5?

I've said for a while the second News programme should be scrapped or be on much later. It's no good Channel 5 trying to compete with the BBC or ITV as people will always choose the latter services before the former. Surely Channel 5 should be trying to produce programmes at times less served by News (such as the 5pm show) or do something different that might pick up the old viewer (but not as in depth as Channel 4 News)? Mind you ITV seem to be trying something like that with Mr Bradby at the moment...is there much more for a News programme to experiment with?

Part of the issue is the amount of news hours C5 have to provide. The 6.30 slot in the past has been used to provide showbiz news. They know that they can't compete with the other PSB's, so is essentially filler.

Exactly. I was really surprised when Channel 5 didn't ask Ofcom to cut their News programming remit in the recent Licence renewal. However what would they replace the News programme with?

Anyone remember that 'You're On Sky Sports' programme years ago, could C5 produce a News version of that I wonder? Yes it might last a hour but there's a chance it could be popular. You could even have a 5 minute bulletin at the start of the programme...or maybe not. Very Happy

I'd assume the cheapest way to provide that 30 mins is to provide the current 6.30 format with guests padding. At one point, the 6.30 was a carbon copy of the 5pm bulletin.

Or a news hour at 5 like Live at 5 on Sky News, called 5 News Live at FIVE with Sian Williams:

- Gives 5 PBS kudos to have a 60 min news show like Channel 4
- Allows for more guests, interaction with the journalists, analysis of the stories that matter to 5's viewers at that time
- More extensive coverage of foreign or more complex stories towards the end of the hour

For what it's worth 5 News were doing their migrant journey stories over the last 2 weeks. It seems to be ITV News copying them

And how much would all of that cost C5 ?

The existing budget could do it but I reckon 5 News needs a couple of permanently based foreign correspondents at existing ITN bureaux, so a couple more million would probably be required. As the budget for news on 5 is being increased, this shouldn't be an issue.

Do you know the existing budget?

Aye, just throw numbers about like that, I'm sure you'll get taken seriously around here...!
