Football... football... football... I know the channel is there to replace Sky Sports News on cable, but really - how about a sports channel that actually focuses on more than one sport!
If it's anything like Sky Sports News re Football then it's going to be a great disappointment. Why can't they be honest and call themselves Sky Football News and Setanta Football News.
Because a decent amount of other sport is covered, whether it has as much coverage as the football news or not.
Cricket is often the top story in the afternoon and further afield when there is a test match or a development with regards to an england or senior county player.
The fact of the matter is, Sky Sports News delivers exactly what 95% of the market wants, football news, with added coverage of cricket and rugby etc, and this is why it has turned out to be, IMO, one of the most successful, if not the most successful, channels going. With any other formula, SSN wouldn't have even half the audience it does now.

To compete with Sky Sports News, ITN chief executive Mark Wood said the format will be “young and fairly chatty” with a heavy emphasis on Premiership football though golf, tennis and racing will be part of the mix too. To the untrained eye, it appears to focus on a reliable combination of talking heads and scrolling statistics.

It says channel 435 from Thursday. Don't really see why Sky would be arsey, its not like their other channels don't have competition either.

I think Sky have put a halt on new channels on their platform due to the large number of EPG entries causing problems with old boxes.
If not there is certainly a big queue of channels waiting to get on Sky Digital

Sky have been as arsey as possible in the past with channels far less of a direct threat than Setanta Sports News.
None of the ITV channels have been available from the launch - while Sky screwed C4 over completely over their plans to make More4 FTA on all platforms at launch.

The ITV thing wasn't down to Sky. There was no regionality on their platform at the time and ITV had another digital platform they were trying to promote.
The More 4 thing was contractual AIUI

Yep, and as you say Sky have put a halt on new additional channels on the Sky EPG but are encouraging broadcasters to do deals with each other about channel space etc.
If Setanta Sports News does launch as planned on Thursday I would imagine they will be taking the space currently/recently used by another (probably one of the smaller) channels.

I thought Setanta are using the space from one of their two PPV channels to carry Setanta Sports News.
