Some news about ITN's Setanta Sports News channel from todays Times :
IN a tiny studio that used to be inhabited by the defunct quiz channel Big Game TV, ITN’s biggest new project for seven years is taking shape.
Before a trademark yellow backdrop, the crew for Setanta Sports News, a 24-hour-a-day rolling news service, is going through another dry run in preparation for its launch on Thursday.
To compete with Sky Sports News, ITN chief executive Mark Wood said the format will be “young and fairly chatty” with a heavy emphasis on Premiership football though golf, tennis and racing will be part of the mix too. To the untrained eye, it appears to focus on a reliable combination of talking heads and scrolling statistics.
After recruiting 60 staff in the past month, Wood said: “We think our visuals are better than Sky’s. We are looking for more exciting presentation and we want more reporting.”

Just seen an ad on Setanta (thanks to the Ł1 and the next two months is freeoffer!) promoting the channel showing off ITN's atrium.

Ah - I'd noticed ITN logos on that part of the frontage of 200 GIR.
(For the uninitiated, it's studio 5, the original Five News studio, that Setanta Sports News will be using.)

Football... football... football... I know the channel is there to replace Sky Sports News on cable, but really - how about a sports channel that actually focuses on more than one sport!

Supply and demand, I suppose. I'd imagine the majority of viewers will be tuning in for football news. I'm sure other sports will get a look in.

If it's anything like Sky Sports News re Football then it's going to be a great disappointment. Why can't they be honest and call themselves Sky Football News and Setanta Football News.

Because sometimes they have the rights to other major sporting events and want to generate some hype for them.
