BBC News coverage

I don't think it's been posted in this thread, but two extraordinary videos of a full day of BBC World have appeared on YouTube - I'm mystified why they've appeared recently after all this time. And yes there's the BBC Editors blog posts saying the BBC didn't have access to the output of World from the day.

I think I've worked out that 25 min 40 is the TOTH each hour. Also a reminder of how slick Nik Gowing was.

And
https://youtu.be/NuDQ1x3RuHs 37 min is TOTH here. And I note that World took News 24 overnight including its countdowns?

In the first video at around 5.04.30 the Live graphic changes position on screen next to the bbc world name. Why Was this done and how easily would have it have been for them to have done that?

There are a couple of explanations for the LIVE bug changing. The LIVE bug was generated by a separate graphic source and keyed on a separate keyer (the graphics box doing it could also say Latest News, News Update or similar and could be changed with a simple key pad next to the vision mixer)

If there was a sharing of output between News 24 and BBC World then there could have been a reason to change the live bug at a certain point as the feeds used to send to the two networks were changed etc.

Dan Rather interviews a famous Chicago local news anchor, Carol Marin, who at the time was reporting for CBS News and was caught in the building collapse. She was interviewed on set with Mr Rather covered in dust and debris. It was shocking to see at the time.
Just this week Mrs Marin just announced her retirement from WMAQ NBC 5 Chicago after 48 years. On her retirement they were finally able track down the firefighter that saved her life that day. They dont make anchors like her anymore.

Thanks for this. Wasn’t familiar with this name before. Led me to a fascinating read/watching old clips re her quitting as anchor in protest at dumbing down & finally the station hiring Jerry Springer for a commentary spot during her 10pm news broadcast. Seems like it was a huge media story at the time.

It was a massive media story. And just to clarify she and her co-anchor the incomparable Ron Magers BOTH stepped down from NBC 5 Chicago when it was announced that Jerry Springer was going to do commentaries. They wanted to nothing to with it. Jerry Springer's talk show for decades was taped down the hall at the NBC Tower in Chicago before it moved in it final years. The experiement didnt last long due to the public outcry and it was quicky dropped. Ron Magers when on to be the lead anchor and #1 rival WLS ABC 7 and Carol left to join CBS News (when she got trapped in NYC during 9/11) eventually going back to Chicago to anchor the local WBBM CBS 2 News solo and then eventually returning to WMAQ NBC 5 as the political director.
I'm here to give you something to talk about! You're Welcome.

I love the gravitas of Trev’s announcement at 53:30 about Coronation Street being moved to ITV2.

I wonder what moving Corrie to ITV2 meant in terms of the non Carlton/Granada stations. Would STV, UTV and Channel have been compensated for having paid for a programme no longer airing on the network?

This is a bit pedantic, but what Trev is referring to here is that Corrie was supposed to be on at 9.45 because there was supposed to be a Champions League match on that night, but when the match was cancelled, as they all were that night, they showed Corrie at 7.30 as usual. But anyone relying on the TV guides and tuning it at 9.45 would have missed it, hence the seemingly unscheduled ITV2 repeat.

There's no way they'd have only shown an episode of Corrie on ITV2, especially back in 2001!

I think back then ITV2 screened the episode at 7.30 when it moved to 9.45 on ITV1, so they just switched the showings around.
Turns out nobody had 2020 vision.

Around this time they would indeed premiere an episode on ITV2 at 7.30 if it was going to be late on ITV1, yes.

And here's how it was promoted, simple but effective.
