"Russia Today is a news channel oriented to global viewers. It broadcasts in English, 24 hours a day. The channel beams by satellite to five continents, reaching 100 countries. The programme “wheel” has hourly blocks of international news about what’s happening in Russia and the world around it, about business, culture, sport and science topics in a comprehensive picture of latest global events. Russia’s growing role in the international economy, alongside political and economic co-operation and joint international projects in many fields of activity, all generate interest not only in events in Russia but also in Russia’s own assessment of global events. "
It's not *that* new - apparently it has been broadcasting since last December.
This seems to be broadcasting in real time on Info TV 2 (Sky 182) at the moment.
Compared with AJE, it looks quite cheap. The Wikipedia entry speculates that the channel is under the direct control of the Kremlin.
This channel is a bit of a mystery. Yes, they did launch a few months ago, but certainly not on the scale of AJE. I looked at their website a few months ago and there were some notable newsreaders it seems inlcuding Liz Geogrge from CNN in London. I didn't think it was broadcast in the UK yet. Seems very similar to CCTV9 - presents itself as an international news channel, but in reality local (mainly political) stories come first.
I've been watching RT on and off for around a month now after stumbling across it by accident, it is essentially the russian news in English, there is no real international news as such on the channel.
Yes it does broadcast out of that set, although there are other simple studios for IMHO (In My Humble Opinion) and Spotlight (on now).
The online stream you will find, is dodgy it is constatly going up and down.
There certainly is speculation that it is controlled by the Kremlin and the fact that there are very few commercialy adverts on the channel might give something away...
The main reason I started watch was that i wanted to see Kevin Owen on air again (ex-Sky).
Russia Today has been broadcasting for almost a year. It's online stream has become rather dodgy. I actually quite like it, but sometimes there does seem a pro-kremlin slant, although they have critisised the lack of free media in Russia (complete with interview of President Putin)
Having watched the channel, it's a lot more DWTV in style than CNN or Al Jazeera. It's simple and the set is pretty dull. However, I do quite like the on screen graphics. They're very clear and consice. They look like they've basically been stolen or 'inspired' by DR TV in Denmark

They say it will go 24hrs by January, and will be in the News section.
