Good night for ITV News then. And I hope I'm not the only one to read the list of winners and think "Who is Jihadi Terror?" Wink

Interesting Sky News scooping News channel of the Year. Nothing against the channel at all (infact I watch Sunrise over BBC Breakfast) - but the BBC News channel would have been my choice in terms of well-rounded journalism, reporting and presentation during the last 12 months. I've always wondered what the judging criteria in the News channel of the Year category is.

At least those pointless straps will disappear off CNN now.

The best regional bulletin went to SET. A controversial decision considering the editorial agenda has slanted to the right, has UKIP on a daily basis and panders to their whims, such as stories about immigration.

However, thanks to it's small editorial area, it's able to super serve it's area really well, which may have swayed the RTS judges.

Very pleased for ITV. They are always deemed to be the underdog but their reporting, especially on international events, is brilliant despite them being a much smaller broadcaster than the BBC. Well deserved. The only award I don't really 'get' is Mark Austin as best newsreader - I appreciate his wealth of knowledge and experience however I've never really rated him and would've preferred to see Julie Etchingham win.

I think Sky News are well deserved with their win too. I find their coverage, especially on breaking news events, to be much more proactive and pacey.

Also very happy to see Alison Holt walking away with an award. Every single report I've seen from her has been brilliant. Topical, important and very strong in terms of journalism.

Agree - always quite liked Mark and think he is one of the best when anchoring on location but frankly Julie is the star of ITV News at the moment, and as I've said many times easily the best signing they've ever made.

The RTS seem to loathe the BBC News Channel. I think it's only ever won the best news channel award once.

RTS, and most awards, are nothing more than incestuous industry backslapping, no one in the real world pays any attention, do they ?

The industry should really strive to impress the public, not peers

Agreed. Totally well deserved. I certainly turn to SkyNews first over BBC for big stories especially for breaking stories. IMO they are a bit more ....proactive is probably the best word....rather than sitting around waiting for press releases or being spoon fed by police etc. (Not saying official word is not relevant, but enterprise reporting is very important.)..... to me it seems they get out there and dig and you get that from the style of reporting. I guess if comes down to the style of reporting you prefer. I've always preferred a rawer style of news gathering. A bit more down and dirty. Sometimes they go too far. Cough-Kay Burley-cough.
I do think they should look at other areas domestically where they can improve the speed of newsgathering such as possibly partnering with the new local channels in news share network and live skyline camera networks in the major city centres rather than solely relying on screenshots of maps or stills. But over all they do a good job. Well deserved by the Sky News team.

I'm not sure either Sky News or the BBC News Channel are targeting the US market.

You say this, yet you've seen the quality of the local channel newsgathering.

We don't have recognisable skylines in the UK, with each major city only having a couple of nationally recognised landmarks at best, so a map or still is far more useful to the average viewer. Even London can only really claim three recognisable structures on its skyline - BT Tower, the Shard and the Gerkin. Everything else is just a generic tall tower that could be anywhere in the world.
