Ooooh......I have definitely shot myself in the foot and got this move all wrong.

The RTE main evening news is being shown from the CSO studio as well.

I suspect they are upgrading studio 3 to broadcast in HD as it was reported in January of this year that RTE were spending €3million on studio upgrades to HD http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/news/rte-plans-3m-studio-upgrades-for-ratings-battle-30876782.html
It would make sense to it this time of the year as August is the month that studio 3 would be less utilised with six one reduced to half hour and TWIP, leaders questions and News2day all off air for the month of August.

It's not the CSO studio. This is a temporary set which will be in use for a while during August.

RTE News at 6.1 does look like it's in HD today.

I always thought it already was. Least it always looked sharper on RTÉ One HD then it did on RTÉ One on Sky.

Can anyone describe a typical day's schedule on RTE News Now, I can't see any schedule for it anywhere. Apparently it mostly just repeats RTE One news bulletins until the next one?

Simulcast of RTE Radio 1's Morning Ireland, at 7am, repeated at 9am. All RTE1 news updates and shows air live as well on News Now, News2Day also airs live on News Now. Current Affairs programmes like Nationwide & PrimeTime also simulcast. RTE News Now produces their own bulletins at 10pm and 11pm. EuroNews airs overnight.

There are additional features such as RTE News Highlights and RTE TEN News, but it's mostly simulcasts and repeats to fill the time.

There are live ten minute news bulletins at 11:00, 15:00 and 16:00 as well.

What does a simulcast of a radio show consist of?

I also note the RTE doesn't do a breakfast show on RTE One, the only breakfast show is on TV3. Has this always been the case?

If Teleshopping is seen as an acceptable programme at that time, I assume breakfast TV isn't really a thing in Ireland and it is seen as a dead time slot?

From what I've seen of it, it's literally just a couple of cameras in the radio studio, although the presenters are usually smartly dressed.

As far as I'm aware this has always been the case. Even UTV Ireland bother with Ireland Live during the regional opt outs of Good Morning Britain, even if the summaries are very short.

There are a number of reasons.

Before Ireland AM, RTE did look into commissioning a breakfast show, which was to be made by an independent. They ended up in lengthy negotiations with the unions which never reached a satisfactory conclusion. In the meantime Ireland AM was launched. Here's a story from the time:

http://www.irishtimes.com/business/rte-to-give-control-of-ad-slots-to-gmitv-1.197045

Another is internal RTÉ politics. Morning Ireland, RTÉ Radio 1's breakfast show, is the Irish equivalent of the Today programme and is regarded as the most prestigious current affairs programme on Irish radio, if not broadcasting in general. It is the highest rated radio show in Ireland and RTÉ is mad fearful of cannibalising its audience. Hence witness the recent "late breakfast" show Morning Edition, a breakfast programme in all but the fact that it didn't start till 9:00am. Which was naturally a disaster.

Then there's just the fact that Ireland AM at this stage has the market cornered. I don't think there's room for more than one live breakfast show in the market.

RTÉ did do continuity for kids during The Den's "Socky's Big Little Morning Show" about ten years ago. It may have been all recorded, though. Since the scrapping of the Den I don't thing there is any continuity between kids shows any more, just idents and trailers.

The 5:40-6:00pm slot on RTE One seems odd, particularly the signed news, it almost spoils the day's news before the main news, so you already know the main stories before the news starts. I'm surprised they don't run that at 6:55 instead.

What is that time slot supposed to consist of as when I saw it seemed to start late, have all kinds of odds and sods and be very padded out with ad breaks. Also I'm guessing RTE still has a remit to do Irish language news despite TG4 existing?

Showing the feed from the autocue in the signed/subtitled bulletin is different, I haven't seen that before.
