Discussion about RTE News

It really is very nice, after decades of somewhat feeble attempts to emulate the BBC - save for one moment of erm...originality (the ghastly brown news set of 2006)

I'm not a huge fan of virtual newsroom backdrops but it really is one of Lightwell's best efforts.

At least RTE News did not chose to go full green screen backdrop like ITV News. They could have transformed Studio 3 into a complete green screen studio, and just plonked a desk in the middle, with a fake newsroom backdrop. The current new look, with the real back screens is just right, as with green screen, again it is a hit and a miss approach.

ITV News have become the pioneers of the green screen newsroom - starting in 2004 with their "Theatre of News" set. At least RTE didn't go down that path, heavens know what kind of mess they would have created.

Their 1994 to 1997 attempt at a BBC News virtual studio look was really crap, even for 1994. The cut out and paste was so obvious, even more limited than the BBC News virtual studio had.

Personally the main crime of that set (apart from, how, er, green it was) was that it was an absolutely blatant copy of the BBC virtual set look. Virtually every element of it, music and titles aside, was a straight copy of the BBC look with the colour changed from blue to an awful shade of green. The set, the window, Tthe astons, the graphics, the virtual glass on the opening wide studio shot - the lot. Virtually nothing about it was original.

RTE News need to take a hard look at RTE News Now channel and decide whether they should keep this pretend 24 hour news channel or dump it in the trash can where it belongs.

It is still filled with simulcasts of Euronews, RTE Radio 1, RTE 1 current affairs and RTE 1 news bulletins, why the hell do they still bother.

Is this a case of RTE wanting to continue to look like a version of the BBC, with a news channel under their belt?

Or you know, it might be a cheaper way to do the originally planned RTE International channel. Do it as a streaming service, RTE International would have primarily been RTE's news and current affairs programming anyway, so this is a much cheaper way to do it.

RTÉ have called in a well known Irish journalist, from outside the broadcaster, to complete a screen test for Prime Time.

https://extra.ie/2020/09/15/entertainment/movies-tv/rte-staff-jobs-row-prime-time-host

There is a big row that has taken place between staff at RTÉ over this move because of it's current financial difficulties. The National Union of Journalists have written a letter to RTÉ to express concerns about the recruitment process at the broadcaster.

Quote:
One RTE source said: ‘It’s crazy, with the levels of talent we have, to be bringing someone in from the outside at a time when we’re told we’re in serious financial trouble. ‘It’s just madness. Louise, Mark and Richard have all shown they can do the job, but even outside of them there are others internally you could look to.’

Senior management at RTÉ had a big crunch meeting 50 producers based in RTÉ to discuss this issue. All of the 50 producers who were there at the meeting have handed up a letter to also express concerns about lack of transparency over RTÉ's recruitment process.

Two producers were appointed to RTÉ in the summer without a fair recruitment process being put in place in which other people who work at RTÉ could apply for these roles internally. But these producers brought in during the summer for RTÉ Radio 1 were brought in without any form of recruitment competition with other people knowing about applying for these roles. What a utter farce.
