You don't really realise how small Studio 3 actually is until you see it stripped back like this here. It is a very historic studio in RTE, one of the original three built in 1961-62.

Studio 3 was extended about 10 years ago, to accommodate the set that was removed yesterday. I don't believe there are any plans to further extend the studio. The plans to build new admin buildings and studios seem to have been put on hold indefinitely - I've heard nothing more on that in recent years. It'll be interesting to see what Studio 3 looks like a month-and-a-half from now.

The Week in Politics is also coming from the temporary studio today. It's being broadcast with the same RTÉ News roller blind background that is used for the main news bulletins for the next couple of weeks. I saw the ad for it on RTÉ One HD a short time ago. It will be broadcast again for the repeat from 11:30pm tonight.

I think that roller blind background will probably not change for Leader's Questions & News2day during this week & in the lead up to Christmas. I think the idea for going around this is that RTÉ are going the real cheap route with this temporary studio as the costs for the new setup is to be estimated between €1.7 million & €2 million. It is quite a lot of money to spend when they had a major revamp just 10 years ago.

I think the money that they are spending now to upgrade Studio 3 needs to be spent in a sensible way. I would be happy for them to make it have a much better studio layout than we have had in the previous 10 years. Maximizing the floor space by having a smaller desk for the main newsreaders to read their bulletins & having a new newswall is a good way to go about it. People paying the TV Licence Fee have probably given up a stink about it in recent times but they have to adapt with the current space that is available in Montrose.

RTÉ still have their new headquarters in Montrose to be built as a long ambition of theirs in the future. But that is going to take a really long time to get it built right even if they ever get the planning permission for a new project approved from ABP in what is really a substantial construction project for an Irish state broadcaster.

The Week in Politics is coming from the temporary studio as well with the same RTÉ News roller blind background. I saw the ad for it on RTÉ One HD a short time ago. So an educated guess would place them possibly in Studio 2?

Yes, RTE told me it was doubled in size from around 700 Sq Ft to close on 1,300 Sq Ft, however they have not updated their studios website information on the size of the studio. Probably down to the fact is Studio 3 is RTE News based and could not be used by any other independent productions.

I'd be very surprised if it was Studio 2. I would've said it would be safe to rule out Studio 1, 2, 4 and 5 - given the length of time the temporary set is required for. And I can't see them altering the background in the temporary studio for any of those other programmes. They left it in place for today's The Week in Politics. It's a temporary studio and I'm sure they'll want to keep any alterations to an absolute minimum.

This is what makes me think it is Studio 6, 7 or 8 - the three small presentation studios, out of which Studio 6 is the largest.
