Plus, I hope they don't get rid of the music. It's a cracking news intro. Anthemic and modern. Be a travesty if the current theme is replaced by yet another beeps and drums mess composed by David Lowe.

I agree. I don't think they should change the look and graphics as well as the theme. It's the best RTÉ's had for years.

It's the set that drastically needs the change considering it hardly reflect the look of the graphics at all and is very dark and dingy. Lets hope RTÉ see's sense though rebrands in the past have tanked.

Lets hope RTE gives them more space with a bigger studio. Studio 3 was fine for the 1960s when it opened, when news was just two 15 minute bulletins a day. Now in 2018, Studio 3 is just far too small, and TV3 have a better sized Studio 1 for their 3News hub.

According to the tender documents the news studio will be remaining in studio 3. The main desk being made smaller to accommdate the second presentation area would suggest the studio floor size is not being increased. Apart from whatever minimal space saving is made from the thinner news wall they are installing.

The options of moving into bigger studio wasn't going to be a runner. From an accessibility point of view studio 3 is on the same floor, right beside the newsroom. All the other studios are further down in the complex, while doable would be less convenient for newsroom staff to access. Furthermore as another bigger studio would become the main news studio, it would reduce facility issues for other studio programming. However im open to correction how often studio 2 or 5 are used, the most likely studios news would go to. If memory serves me right, the temporary news studio came from studio 5 when studio 3 was been rebuilt back in 2009.

I was more hopeful the entire newsroom would get any overhaul as part of the proceeds from the sale of land. The newsroom has been instu pretty much the same since the complex opened in 1961. As part of that revamp it would have incorporated a more substantial upgrade of the news studio. It seems the upgrade plans to the existing studio 3 would suggest otherwise.

I have always said Studio 2 would be a great studio for the news output. It was designed in 1961 as a studio for political shows, panel discussions and current affairs. I think "Today Tonight" used the studio in the 1980s. It is nearly 2,000 Sq Ft and would be perfect size for RTE News. The studio is not that far away from the newsroom, so that should never have been an issue, especially now in 2018. ITN news studios are in the basement of their London headquarters and is not right next to their newsroom.

With regards to the RTE News refresh, it looks like it won't be happening in 2018. I have got this reply from RTE News today.

"RTÉ is planning to refresh the RTÉ News Studio 3, which is currently at tendering stage. We haven't announced publicly yet details although there was some recent news reports based on the tender document outline. Currently the on-air target date is early 2019."

They continued - "As stated in the tender document, we are looking at expanding the floor space to provide two presentation areas. This will be achieved by removing the existing video-wall and replacing it with a new thinner wall. New graphics will be designed for the new video-wall: Tungsten lighting will be replaced with LED lighting: and the project will provide capability for the increased use of Automation, Augmented Reality and graphics templates."

They also wanted to clarify some details about Studio 3 - "On the RTÉ News discussion board, there's mention of the floor size of Studio 3 at 728sq ft. This was the old Studio 3 size: as part of the 2008-09 revamp, Studio 3's floor space wall-to-wall increased to approx 1300 sq ft.".

So there we have an update, hope this helps people?

I'd like RTÉ News to be kicked into the 21st Century. The delivery and pres is over-formal at best, even with the two ladies who now present the Six One. It should be more on a par with the BBC main bulletins.

3 News has really awoken how Irish tv news should be presented and is more accessible.

I get the impression he thinks the delivery of BBC News is similarly over-formal. It's not as over-formal as it used to be back when I was a kid, but it's still somewhat on the formal side.

It's modern, while keeping the right level of formality.

Yes, we don't want a Fox News style presentation here. I always remember just one sentence said by their business editor Neil Cavulto back in 2009 which just exposed the bias of that network "President Obama is at it again" - imagine Huw Edwards saying that about Theresa May or one of the RTE News readers saying that about the Taoiseach?
