That new graphic appeared just after the news was relaunched because with the old news graphics, the 'Nuacht RTÉ' DOG covered the RTÉ logo on the weather graphics anyway. After the news relaunch, there were 2 RTÉ logos on-screen at the same time when they showed the weather charts so they got rid of the one on the weather charts and replaced it with the plain white writing - which, as one has now come to expect from RTÉ, looks crap.

RTE will probably get new weather graphics with the new RTE One idents and graphics. The current ones were only introduced in 2005 when RTE went to widescreen though, not with the 2003 revamp. After that they used the old ones (the 4:3 ones) with one adjustment : the "Sea" had a wavy effect rather than just plain blue.
Hope they don't go for the BBC style moving 3D angle...

I sincerely hope they do bring in some new ones. They're really lagging behind TG4 and (I hate to say it) TV3 when it comes to weather graphics. However I wouldn't be completely against a 3D graphics system - there's nothing wrong with the BBC ones IMO apart from the brown land! I find it much easier to interpret the BBC ones. The current weather graphics on RTÉ were introduced in February 2005 - about 4 months before they went widescreen.

but when there are no symbols etc over Ireland (99% of the time) it just resembles a barren desert

Anyone know why NTL still have a 4:3 format for RTE even though they are now broadcasting on 16:9??

Do you have NTL Digital or analogue? Sounds to me like you have analogue because on NTL Digital (in Dublin anyway), RTÉ 1 and 2 definately are both in 16:9. On NTL analogue, no channels are supposed to be in 16:9. However, TV3 and TG4 are still in 14:9L on NTL Digital despite them both being in 16:9 on satellite.
Terrible mess today during the 1PM headlines - the sound on each of 3 reports in a row faded out about 5 seconds into each report resulting in all the reports being cut and the bulletin finishing way before it was supposed to
. I suppose we should be thankful that they bothered to apologise.

I have NTL digital. I am in Belfast. It is definately 4:3 yet the graphics are setup for 16:9.

It's RTE - that's all they're trained to do

I tuned in at about seven or eight minutes past and couldn't understand why the bulletin was over. Should have guessed though.
A bit of a mess up at the 4:25 update today - studio link stayed up after the sign-off. Just as presentation cut them off, they cut to the credits board and we heard about two tenths of a second worth of music.
Rant Eile from Six-One: Sharon, reading the business news, said that the ISEQ Index of Irish shares closed today at "8 point 6 2 1", as opposed to the more obvious 8,621. My guess is that the autocue had it in digit form, and the comma resembled a full stop, but still....

Then it sounds to me like you're watching a squashed 16:9 picture in a 4:3 TV. Fiddle around with the settings on the set-top-box and see if you can get it to go to '4:3 Letterbox'. That should sort out your problem.

I may have a solution to the NTL fiasco. RTE's programming is not the only that NTL botch up on the digital service.
IT's a pain the ass, but if you want to see a channel in widescreen, here's what to do:
1. Press 'Menu' and change the picture aspect to '4:3 Letterbox'
2. Press 'Menu' again to exit.
3. Press 'Help' and then press the yellow button to 'Reset' the system.
4. Wait for the set top box to restart
5. Your programme should now appear in a letterbox but with the proper wide aspect ratio.
It's wierd, but that's how I've found to do it. Trouble is when you change the channel. If you change from RTE 1 to RTE 2 using the Channel + and - buttons, the widescreen feature will remain. But as soon as you key in a channel, e.g. 111 for E4, you lose your widescreen look, and have to restart the system all over.
Sometimes, if you're lucky, changing the screen aspect from 4:3 to 4:3 Letterbox and back to 16:9, you might gain some more screen real estate, but it's not always the case. So far, the 'Restart' method above is the only thing that works for me, on my WideScreen TV with SCART connector (so no excuse NTL!!!)
This method even works on non-widescreen TVs, such as 14" portables. Although it will result in a teeny tiny picture, it's worth it to see what the missing letters to either side of the RTE bulletin are. (Usually misspelled!
)
Give it a try and let me know if you find an easier way. Until NTL start making an effort with their service (such as answering the phone within 30 minutes and getting EVERY channel to stay online at the same time, AND fixing their EPG to follow the liner equation that is TIME) we'll have to suffer on.
Oddly enough, if you have NTL analogue, just change the TV's aspect ratio from 4:3 to something like 'Full', you'll get widescreen all the time.
Hope this helps!

P.S. Good to see Phen is back. Wonder where Teilifís is????
