I remember seeing the other day on RTE News, just at the sport, they didnt leave the shot of the sports presenter quick enough, and so you could see the light kinda fading behind Clare.

To Be Honest, I think RTE drasctily need to change something with their news and current affairs presentation, by the time of the next due revamp, the studio will be really out of date and not in with technology.

The thing i hate the most about RTE news is that all the programmes on RTE One, all look the same; they are of the same format (almost), the titles are al the same, other then the words underneath the logo.

I just hope RTE's Election studio/graphics will be really good, in 2007, by then i guess they might of got their act together, and not use a studio identical to the PrimeTime one, again.

I know this isn't RTE related directly:
But when did TV3 News switch it's 5.30, 7pm bulletins to 5.30, 6.30pm?

rte lost the rights to show Emerdale and Coronation Street a few years back. Emerdale is shown on ITV at 7, so as a result they had to move the programe back. I think it was like in 2001 or so, was a while back

Thankyou.
BTW What's the difference between the main TV3 bulletins?

nothing really

all the reports are excartly the same, the format is the same. bacislly the 6:30 is a repete of the 5:30 but live

Well what's the point? To try and stop people from switching to RTE News Six-One?

its really all about availabliity and choice of viewing

see if you come home at 6:15pm, you basicly missed the main news, cos rte only recap on the headlins, but dont do it again. so the choice you have is:
Arrow watch RTE 6.1 News, getting a lesser service becouse you missed the start
Arrow Watch a slightly lesser quality news service at a time that suits you, on TV3.

Sky News Ireland is a bit the same, but that doesnt get so many viewers.

RTE over the summer dont really care for news, nor does TV3. So over the next 2 months, you will see less news on the Irish TV. There will be 5 mins at one o'clock, 30 mins at 6.1 and i think 25 at 9.

tv3 will have 5:30 and i think they still do news tonight at 11. idk

It may be in their broadcasting contract - TV3 launched with an hour-long TV3 News at Six, but were trashed in the ratings by Six-One. They then split the bulitten in half and moved it to 5:30pm and 7pm. Then when TV3 acquired the rights to Emmerdale (when Granada took their 45% shareholding) they moved the TV3 News to 6:30pm.

The point being, that TV3 may have a contract commitment for a hour of news at tea-time and this is their way of fulfilling it. The BCI do not make their actual contracts public though, so it may not be. TV3 do not have a history of broadcasting public service material beyond what they're obliged to.

Why does RTÉ carry on with this bizzare scenario? Fair enough splitting Six One in half, but 5 minutes at 1pm? A bit pathetic really, considering the fact there's no other Irish TV alternative at 1pm/lunchtime. I realise the fact that fewer people watch TV during the summer, a bit odd though, as you don't see it in the UK.

It's just as bad here in Australia

Forumers (including myself) have been posting a lot of negative feedback about RTÉ News recently so just for a change I've decided to make a few positive comments about RTÉ News.

1. Graphics
The opening headlines use a very clever idea i.e. where the picture fades into the blue and green bars just before the white bar slides across and into the next headline. The title sequence itself is quite good even though the glorious music sometimes seems inappropriate after a distressing final headline. But on a good note, as someone previously said, there's not a globe in sight. I also like the way the graphics make good use of blue and green; the broadcaster's signature colours. The animated horizontal and vertical background bars are very elegant when used behind the sports results, split-screen, scrolling news for the deaf etc.

2. Newsreaders
There are a lot of very capable newsreaders on RTÉ News. Searain Ní Bheoláin has been doing a lot recently and I have to say she's very good. There's the old reliables like Brian Dobson and Eileen Dunne as well as some less seen ones like Niall Carroll, Gareth O'Callaghan and Eileen Whelan who are also quite good.

3. The news itself
The quality of the news and reporting is exceptionally good. There's a good mix of Irish, European and world news and it is a pity that with the cheap set, dodgy astons and some shaky newsreaders, the whole thing can often come across as an unprofessional attempt.

Let's hope that whenever they relaunch they'll build on the good of what they already have and that these simple problems will be ironed out.

Now in fairness to RTÉ that summer break has been getting less and less each year. Time was when Six-One would be chopped in half (and the One axed) for over two months each year. Last year the summer holiday lasted all of four weeks, and it may be the same again (Digiguide have RTÉ listings up as far as the 15th July and a full news service remains at least till then) It may be a union issue, the NUJ are quite powerful in RTÉ.

The Nine has never been affected, nor News on 2 incidently.

Granted, the break shouldn't be there at all. I remember times of important breaking news happening during the break (the Drumcree stand-offs, the Beef Tribunal report, and much international stories) and they weren't properly covered because of the break.

TV3 incidently has had no summer news slash at all, any year.
