So, the backing is the new BBC style.
The only difference between the desk and that of Sky News is that RTE couldn't afford to put LED screens on the front so they opted for the Habitat look!
What a shame the couldn't take the look and do something someone hasn't done before.

Have a look at the titles Jim Very Happy ! But you're right - a lot of outside influence. Personally I don't mind them copying the BBC - I admire everything that comes out of TV Centre!

Heres a bit of a wild guess at the titles, on one part of the Six One titles theres a type of egg shape but its opened up with lots of wires etc running to it. Maybe the titles are SUPPOSED (and fail) to represent that rte news is at the heart of RTE or something?

To be very very fair, the set looks OK, really modern. I do not like the LED Screen/Colourful wallpaper background. It needs some work.

The opening sequence could be better, the music is great though.

Aengus is doing better I believe, but still, he needs some work.

As for everything, Sharon needs to stay at 6.1 now. Una is too old for this set.

Also, does anyone have any idea where I can get my hand on a clean version of the music used for the news?

Have to agree, listening to the music again I think its great exept at the end it should be more tension rather than it just getting quiter? I love the headline bed at the start of the programme though!

As Tinny as it was, the old music was better by a looooooongshot. It was so authoritative and dramatic.

Yes the set looks modern - all but for one glaring thing - They threw bits of dead trees into the middle of it in the form of that 1970's desk! When you are going for a modern look, please jump in with both feet.
The opening is OK I suppose, A few of the packages were very well produced and the live cross looked good. But the desk!!??

The desk would look better if it was a dark mahogany like the old desk, with a shinier texture, but other than that I quite like the desk.

As I was guessing earlier, maybe the titles represent that RTE News is in the heart of RTE or maybe that RTE News is first or something along those lines,
If you take a look at this image http://tvtitles.thetvroomplus.com/images-news/rte/2006-2/six-07.jpg
To me it looks like that gold thing is in the middle and everything surround that so maybe like I said it could be to say RTE News is the heart of ireland or RTE..

Good thinking, but if RTE wanted to demonstrate something, they wouldn't have it as abstract. The fact is is that they are just a few blobs around with RTE NEws slapped on it.

Perhaps this might shine some light on your theory:

That's the very worst part of the titles - nothing happens in that shot and it goes awkwardly silent! The crispness of the titles is very impressive, but otherwise they are appalling.

Thanks for those very fast studio caps Phen! The studio really does look so very very small Sad. What a shame.

Very notable on Nine that the laptop was kept out of shot!
Some images of Eileen's MS in 14:9 letterbox - what the majority of Irish viewers see. Note how tiny Kofi Annan's insert is.

Again the lighting absolutely flawless, as per her stunning raking shot too:

Apparently Eileen was rather surprised by the new look on Friday:

...whilst Anne Doyle is said to be deeply shocked at the relaunch:

...and is refusing to leave the old set, camping out in the bowls of the TV Building in protest. Conciliatory talks are ongoing.

I see Robert Shortt was also mercilessly cropped for his US report - no excuse in his case, as they surely would have comissioned this report for Monday in full knowledge of the change.

At least his live link was fine, and nicely composed at that.

Nice Ryder Cup graphic too:
