A couple of fairly basic ways of improving the look...

1- Sack that presenter - he's ****.

2 - Move the desk so it's centred. It's silly and wrong to have it facing off centre - just silly.

3 - Do more wide shots. Why didn't we see an opener wide shot? Laziness? Probably.

Just a few simple ways to slightly improve a crap look.

BTW - That Guatamal report was a pile of rubbish. What difference did it make to my life? None? That's right.

It looks like theyve tried to look like the BBC, (in some ways)...They have a newswall of some sort, in a space which must be smaller than the BBC's old set, they have these terrible lit up squares above and below the newswall, and a manky backdrop which looks like the sheet of paper which is behind you when you get a school photo took. The desk is just a BBC Four The World rip off, which is stupidly placed in a awkward position. The titles are ment to be some sort of metal which has nothing to do with news, and the logo is boring. The music is sort of ok, but its to weak.

I have to say I actually don't think it's that bad...

The titles are a bit random, and it does look a bit 'regional news' - but I'd say it's definitely an improvement on what they had. I think the graphics look quite classy and the set, while a bit small, does look nice.

it mightn't be so bad if we knew what the hell that stupid graphic at the opening is?? did one of the director's kids go wild with flash and swish or something??

and 'D4' stylists have been yaking on and on for years about style, form and function... I fail to see where these three fundamental characterising sets have anything positive to contribute to this in any way.

I agree, they could of done better, but then again, their RTE. That video wall thing was cheap, because it was probaly a big square of CSO.

I'm worried. I've just realised that the new desk is actually the old Central News West desk from the mid 90s with wood panelling on it. Anyone have the Central TV no? They might want to know that some Irish people have raided their props cupboard!

The studio is the most let down, I think. It looks discusting with those type of light panels above and below the CSO/newswall. The backdrop is horrible aswell.
The music is weak but I kind of like it, and on the graphics I dont think there that bad.

I rather like it to be fair.

I like the backdrop - even though the BBC has all the whizz bang wall to wall video screens all throughout doesn't mean that what they put up as the background is all that nice - some non-discript doubled over backdrop of the not very nice area of London.

The graphics are neat and tidy and are better than the National BBC's.

The desk is a complete copy of Central News circa 1997 with wood panelling and needs to be centred properly.

The titles are mad - is it a ship?? Someone was on something when they did them but I do like them.

7.5 out of 10.

I know it wouldn't be technically possible, but it would be rather nice if the backdrop could subtle animate, like a flag in slow-mo.

What have we done to deserve this? What?

The titles are indeed hideous. Nondescript blobs flying around and not coming to any real conclusion. They don't represent anything. A ship would have been a nice image, showing that members on this forum have better ideas than whoever designed these godawful graphics. Abstract is OK when it looks good. These titles are beyond abstract, and they don't look good.

What I thought would be their one saving grace was the music. The summary music sounded quite warm and proud , for want of a better word. The One O' Clock News version seemed watered down and it concluded before the titles did, necessitating a drawn-out horn noise that would have suited a wide shot of the studio. Unfortunately there was no wide shot but a cut straight to Aengus with the bed (aaaaaaargh!) playing in the background. Presumably this means there will be a bed-accompanied wide shot on Six One tonight. So much for that situation being improved. The bed, incidentally, is extremely dull, comparable to that of five news.

As for the set, there isn't much to be said as there isn't much there. Unfortunately Séamus was right and the desk is identical to that of BBC World's second set. The laptop gets in the way and had to be folded right back, which even then didn't keep it out of shot.

Exactly.

Possibly the worst thing about the whole debacle is that it's still an improvement on what they had previously.

Maybe the I'm being too negative too early, but I doubt it. The return of Six One next week will be the true test of the new look.

I still have hope. Remember everybody hated the BBC set when it first came out. Sure, it's not the greatest set in the world, and the titles make me want to vomit, but it's an improvement. Also, they copied the BBC, but still, it's classier than blue and orange pieces of persepex and verneered wood. It's better than nothing and we have to give credit to RTE for at least trying. Well, not that much credit anyways Wink .
