Very interesting - thanks for that dublinskyboy Very Happy
They're going out very early this year so. Suppose if Monday was one or two days earlier, they would have waited the extra week.

Wood and clever glass sounds very promising - it really does sound like a quality job this time round, an acknowledgement of the lack of resources allocated to the last scheme. At last it seems RTÉ now appreciate the investment that a decent news presentation package is - it's crucial to the image of a station and the level of authority a news service imparts.

I really hope they change the mood of each bulletin, especially Nine - it makes the world of difference to news presentation. A circular desk sounds promising too - finally moving away from the monolith yokes of times past. Wonder if they went for the LED screens in the end, as it was only a 'testing the waters' tender afterall...

Anyone know of any promotional material floating about? This is the day before the relaunch and RTÉ we're talking about here - never ones to miss out on a branding opportunity! Surely there's some pics floating about by now?! There's nothing on their site as yet Sad

ooooh it's so exciting! Very Happy

There's an article in today's Sunday Tribune about it, along with a shot of the set! Unfortunately its a close-up of Eileen Dunne at the desk so its hard to tell much. Basically backdrop is redish-brown, the desktop is silver, and what I can see of the front of the desk is brown.

The set is apparently made of "walnut glass and aluminuim", is 8 sq metres in area. Apparently the idea is "the feel of a room, with real materials and textures, rather than a studio set, creating a mood of warmth, strenght, and authority". Hmm...

The article also mentions what RTÉ call "LED lighting" which will alter the lighting, "reflecting both the time and each programme's individual style".

As well as RTÉ News, News2day, Oireachtas Report, Leader's Questions, and The Week In Politics will all use the news set. The news will go out in widescreen and will relaunch tommorow.

Thanks for that rdd Very Happy

How interesting - I just knew they'd go for the 'room' look! That was the problem of that last studio: it was half room, half studio set. It didn't know what it was, so clearly that was their primary concern this time round, to make no mistake as to what the space is - an excellent move.
So does it look spacious or cramped rdd? Any wood panelling behind Eileen? - walnut seems like a good compromise anyway between the cheapness of washed out beech and the over-bearing heaviness of darker woods.

So 'LED lighting' - does this refer to the backdrops or the studio lighting? Perhaps colour-changing LED screens are being placed behind opaque glass walls? Excellent news about different moods for different bulletins! - fantastic Very Happy

Interesting News2Day are going to make use of it. I wonder if they'll only use a small section of backdrop that they can change the style of completely, given their pres is completely at odds with standard news output. Presumably News on Two will use the conventional setup...
Overall a heck of challenge for the designers involved, the set also including TWIP and Leader's Questions. It'll be very impressive if they manage to pull it off successfully.

Hard to tell, the only shot is a narrow shot of Eileen at the desk, with the backdrop in view and a laptop. The backdrop certainly doesn't look woode, the only thing I can describe it is red and brown. Kind of like pastels. You don't see very much of the front of the desk at all, though it looks like it might have wood there . Presumably the wood panelling is at the side of the studio? Also, it doesn't look like a round desk (a la BBC), more curved...

NOOOOOOOOOOOO - not laptops surely?!!!

Oh God save us all. And to think we've only just seen them successfully banished from BBC News! Sad
Typical of them to go for a silly glitzy 'modrin' distraction - feck it anyway Twisted Evil
Here's hoping there's no other concessions to the whims of fashion.

Bah - that's put a real dampener on proceedings.

Wow. Perhaps RTE will make us proud finally. I think this will be very good. All we can do is wait...

EDIT:
Any word on if the idents will be launched tommorow?

Sorry for the poor image quality. It looks like the desk is incredibly narrow, perhaps making the laptop more of a necessity than a design feature. It's almost completely sideways in the above image. The image gives very little away, but I'm really unsure about that brown colour. It's very adventurous and could end up looking very warm and classy, but could very easily end up looking terrible.

Oh my god this is sooo exciting! I was right afterall with my guess of Monday 28th August for the news, and I feel that the RTE One rebrand will go live on the 4th of September.

Great photo (don't worry about the scan) of Eileen looking proud behind the desk. Interesting they chose her for the press-release, and not Dobbo or Sharon! Could this be signalling Dunne's leadership of the Nine news with maybe the brown theme for that bulletin (the so-called "Main Evening News")??

Interesing point in the article:

"The new studio will be used for the Six One and Nine O'Clock News programmes, as well as the five daily bulletins on RTE One."

Doesn't specifically mention the One News, rather 5 daily bulletins... Could this signal an early morning news to conquer TV3's dominance in morning television, with the One news becoming a full news & business affair?? Something seriously lacking in RTE's coverage is a decent Business section.

Fierce intriguing that Oireachtas Report will be shot in studio as well. This might take the programme deep into late prime-time slots as opposed to the manic late-night slot it has occupied until now - and also get Micheál Lehane off the streets as it were come winter time outside Leinster House.

I cannot believe that it's going out tomorrow night though. Just hope I can make it home in time to see if they pull off the first bulletin... it'll be all swings and roundabouts if they can!

P.S. I like the downlighters in front of the desk... and I'm not sure I mind the laptop on the desk either... might help them with autocue and breaking news stories... I can only imagine it was impossible to see the manky TFT monitors hidden under the smoke-glass on the 'megalithic' structure in the Temp studio!

Yes that photo does give very little away - its hard to tell whether they will still look cramped or not but I like the silver on the desk but I do wonder why they stuck with the idea of wood - I thought they would want to get rid of it after all the bad memories Very Happy . We still have no idea how big the desk actually is and whether they'll be fiddling with it when it comes to TWIP or Leaders questions or whatever. The laptops are very BBCish (and very swish at the same time) but they probably are a necessity like you said. At least now they might be able to read from the laptop when the autocue goes down instead of rummaging through a load of papers!

And does anybody know - is there a news summary scheduled for tomorrow morning before 1pm? I can't see one on the listings but I presume they would still use the old broom-cupboard for that if there is going to be one, right?

OOOH so they're ditching the SOCR and broom-cupboard - excellent Very Happy ! (Well I hope so anyway!)

EDIT: And when they say it will look like a "room" moreso than a TV studio, I presume they mean that it will have carpet? Excellent stuff Very Happy
