Hmmm - that is very interesting rdd. Thanks for that.
Alas the Herald website is as useless as ever.

I've nothing against brown and cream - God knows it's being propagated to death by most major Irish retailers at the minute - but am concerned as to its longevity if it proves dull and uninspiring. But no WAY can they use those hideous titles in the Autumn promo Shocked

As for the LED screens - for all we know they could just form an illuminated backdrop with an interesting pattern displayed on it: impossible to say at the minute. We shouldn't jump to conclusions about stupid stand-up acts just yet!

Have to say, without shadow of doubt, the best Nine I've ever seen tonight. Really tight ship run with very little hiccups. Ken Hammond and Eamonn Horan work very well together. Hammon was particularly worthy of praise with his perfect cueing, quick-cuts to reports and tight returns to studio. He really moves things along perfectly. Horan too, who's an excellent presenter in his own right, was very good tonight - sharp, great use of inflections and overall presentation was snappy. Very well done. Just shows how the experience of Hammond matched with the persona of Horan can really get a new 'bulletin' down perfectly. Must say gallery were excellent too, with only 2 slight technical faults with reports.

By the way, anyone think that the Temp Set's graphics are being run from server-based VT?? Seems much snappier and the graphics are fierce standardised?? Would make sense in getting used to server-based output in the run up to the new launch, and it would explain the mysterious sharpening up of the graphics beds for the titles and the astons??? Anyone subscribe to that notion??

lol - is this RTÉ News best practice: two feck-ups per bulletin? Very Happy
The highest attainable standard...

But yes, fully agreed about what was a fantastically tight bulletin this evening. There is no question that the output from the temp studio has been miles over and above the production values of Studio 3 - a farcical state of affairs when one considers Studio 3 has RTÉ's flagship gallery, not to mention it being probably the most advanced television news production facility in Ireland, with massively engineered, fine-tuned camera, lighting and sound. And yet the output from a tossed-together temporary studio is actually proving to be much more impressive! Okay the lighting is a bit dodgy, but the gallery operations are second to none – the cues wonderfully tight, the sound mixing flawless, the graphics spot on etc etc.

It’s hard to say if it’s because of different equipment being used, or because there’s a new crew in for the summer period. Personally I suspect the latter – it seems there’s just decent vision mixers and VT ops beavering away on a mixture of equipment brought over from Studio 3 and some temporary stuff. Well done to all involved. Whichever explanation it is, they’ve either shown up the regular gallery team as the inefficient shower that they are, or have highlighted how inadequate the Studio 3 gallery is.

And yes Hammond is a superb professional, his only problem as we know being his handling of ‘interviews’. He does also have a habit of not fully engaging with the viewer by not making enough effort to hide that he’s reading an autocue – he does tend to churn it out at times, mainly the top story. Otherwise, without doubt one of the best Wink.
Likewise Eamon – a superb operator in every respect. He’s the ultimate cool customer, never phased by the slightest glitch, and so effortlessly natural. He’ll often even read a story slouched to one side, with his script in his hand in shot – it looks wonderfully conversational, if a bit too casual Smile. It’s amazing the difference holding a script makes in creating the impression that you're not reading a thing. Only one thing though, his fashion sense Shocked. He has an impressive wardrobe, but good god, some of the stuff he comes out with would make your eyes water – like tonight’s concoction! Why ruin a perfectly lovely light charcoal suit with a day-glo blue shirt with white collar and cuffs?!! Someone get this man some fashion advice!

I really like Ken Hammond. Its an awful pity he doesn't do more bulletins than he already does. I think I said this before but he's by far the best newsreader in RTÉ who doesn't have a regular slot. Eamonn Horan is also very good I'll agree. He would be great reading the news itself if he got a bit more formal but I'm sure he could handle that. He copes well with the unexpected - on 6.01 yesterday after an interview in Croke Park, the interviewee ran off onto the pitch in full view of the camera and it looked dyre but he just brushed it off like water off a duck's back! He's very good.

Regarding the graphics - diarmy you may be right. There seems to be a strange black line on the sides of the astons/live DOG and the HEADLINES banner amongst other graphics which suggests that they're being generated from a different source to usual.

Could you imagine if RTÉ had monitors behind the presenter? That would probably be a common occurance.

Anyway, perhaps the ship-looking graphic is a news ident rather than part of the intro? It might work..

It's very surprising nothing like this ever happened to RTÉ during the 1997 scheme, not to mention nearly every night of the week!

Speaking of feck-ups - a disaster occured the other night on News on Two. Might as well give the link directly to the source:

What a pity News on Two isn't webstreamed! Though I've a feeling even RTÉ wouldn't put that up online. Very odd there was such a major lighting and VT problem in the same bulletin.

The past few days have seen rather dodgy cuts from Pres to the Newsroom, with a scrappy bit of black flicking in on the cut - strange it should start this late into the use of the temp studio.
Also on this studio, it would appear the principal presenter camera is manual afterall. Judging by the movements I've seen, often involving minute panning forth and back, and forth again, and often up and down too, very much suggests manual control. It's a lot harder to reframe remotely without things being noticed, and so remote ops tend to be very conservative in their use of the joystick. By contrast it's much more tempting (and often smoother) to move a camera manually, and keep tweaking at that!

Eileen also often talks to someone at the end of bulletins now, so clearly there's at least one person in studio manning the cameras - hardly a floor manager as they don't appear to use them anymore.

I wasn't watching it last night! The one night something interesting happens Rolling Eyes but reading that thread does make it appear to be quite serious - a blackout in the studio??? How on earth could that happen? The temp set-up seems to be falling apart alright and only just after the wonderful Nine they did the other night!
